The Friday June 5, 6.30 am run:
RA Edie, Debra, Rod and Bobtoc met at the Centre 6.30 am for a run west on our usual route. Before embarking however, the Cruisers on hand took the opportunity finally of awarding to Debra the Cruisers’ Faller’s Trophy to commemorate her fall at the Vancouver Half Marathon May 5. Debra still sports a red mark on her left elbow where the skin was completely taken off. It will be weeks before she grows new skin of consequence. The three Cruisers stood at inertia, very solemn-like while the presentation was made. Debra said the trophy will be put on the mantle at home, next to husband Chris’s trophy for sailing. Hmmm. The two awards have something in common – navigation; Chris’s award for something done well, and Debra’s for, oh well… Debra klutzed the award to her body before placing it gently in the boot of her Tercel.
The foursome then ran west on the usual route, Eastlake, Underhill, Broadway, Greystone, the blacktop path from Duthie to Cliff Ave, across the Westridge School campus, continuing half way through the lane behind Safeway at Kensington Plaza, returing the same route. Distance, 15 km, time, 1.53. Debra and Rod led the way. The four enjoyed a cool start but the day warmed up considerably by the time the run was completed. On the way out, Tracy appeared at the entrance to the Stoney Creek trail, having completed her 5.30 am run with Chris Conn.
From Tracy describing the Friday June 5, 5.30 am run:
Hi! That was a surprise seeing you guys running this morning! I hope you had a good one. I ran with Chris at 5:30 and we did mostly trails to forest grove and for about 1:15 or so. Nice and cool compared to how it has been.
From Larry describing the Saturday June 6, am run:
On Saturday June 6, it was a welcome cooler temperature of about 19 C but a bit humid, with the cloud covering the sky as Stormin’ Norman, Larry, Sharon, Shiraz and Leanne Dalton and Lynn and Alfred Field started out at 7:35 a.m. The former four ran from Cameron to Burnaby North, while Shiraz ran from Cameron to Hastings and Cliff Ave. Larry and Norm spent a few minutes on the swings outside Kensington Rink, then with Sharon, proceeded back, meeting Shiraz along the way. Norm finished ahead as usual with a time of 1:26, Larry followed at 1:34, Sharon in at 1:44 and Shiraz a couple of minutes later. 16 km run. Sharon and Shiraz then went an additional 4 km around the Lougheed area to get a “long” run in to prepare for upcoming half marathons. Perfect weather for running!
Lynn Field reported she, Al, and Leanne Dalton walked 9.44 km, time 1.28, on their route to IGA corner and back. Not shabby at all!
The Girolino di Burnaby duathlons on Hat’s Off Day in Burnaby’s Vancouver Heights, Saturday June 6:
Carla, Joy Borgonia and Bobtoc participated as volunteers to help with the first ever Girolino di Burnaby duathlons for kids on bikes ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 12. The 5 to 7 youngsters ran and cycled in three heats due to the numbers, running to their bikes at the transition lot, climbed on their bikes and cycled one lap in the fenced race course area. The 8 to 12 youngsters ran and cycled in one of two races, one short and one long, being 2000 meters and 3000 meters respectively. All finishers were awarded distinctive medals. The races were a hoot. Some of the small bikes of the 5 to 7 year-olds had training wheels. All participants needed to wear helmets. All bikes were subjected to inspection by Sharkey’s Cycles technicians, and when the bikes were examined and passed inspection, were badged with a Sharkey’s sticker and placed in the transition lot. The races commenced after the Hat’s Off Day parade finished and the yellow bases and bright blue fencing were set up by Rainy’s band of volunteers, comprised largely of the Burnaby running community. This new event was very well organized, thanks to Rainy Kent and Joe Turtle, plus key volunteers from the Eileen Dailly runners. Congratulations to them and indeed all the volunteers who made the event a success. The cloud cover and 18C + temperatures made conditions ideal for the events of the day.
From Norm reporting on his Sunday June 7 run in the White Rock Sandcastle City Classic:
I finished this morning’s 10 KM race in 43:22. I came in 44th overall and sixth in my age group. A well organized race by the Semiamhoo Sunrunners. The weather was perfect.
Edie participated in the 5k Childrun on Sunday. Lots of hill training! It was only hot while we ran and was cool before and after.
