November 3rd: On Monday night, Rod reported that he braved the monsoon rain and swam up through Eastlake, Underhill, Forest Grove and back to Cameron. Time out 57mins. Distance 7.5 km.
At least the water was warm! And swimming is a good total body workout, ha ha!
November 5th:We certainly got a lucky break on Wednesday night for our run. Not only was it nice and mild, it did not rain while we were out there. Rod, Libby, Rachel, Laura and Larry ran along Eastlake, up Underhill, along Forest Grove and back to Cameron Centre, distance 7.5 km, time 1h 04. We were cooling down from our run when we heard the pitter patter of a slight rain, which overnight turned into another monsoon. While cooling down, we were debating who would take the subsidized shower for Bobtoc. We knew Jovan the attendant would miss turning off the hot water… (no, he doesn’t really do that).
November 8th:On Saturday, Laura, Rick, Alex, Larry and Rod ran along Joe’s Trail and back, time 1h 10m, distance 7.5 km. Again we did not encounter rain. It was actually quite a nice day out there. We were able to get a parking spot at the Centre but by the time we got back from our run, the train show had already drawn enough people to fill the lot – it even got some news coverage on CBC.
Also, my apologies to Terri-Lee Seeley, whose Rock n Roll half marathon result was not reported with the others. Her time was 2:27:41. We hope she continues to recover and can join us soon.
On Monday evening, Rod, Laura and Larry again took advantage of the no-precip, although cooler temperature, and ran along Eastlake, Underhill, and back along Forest Grove to Cameron Centre. Distance 7.5 km, time 1 hour on the dot. Also on Monday during the day, Edie, Bobtoc and Rod went for a walk from Bobtoc‘s house to the Café Artigiano just past Hastings and Rosser, and back. Not sure about the distance but it was quite a walk. Good to know that Edie and Bobtoc are on the mend!
From Jennel: Hello all….I went for a run Monday afternoon before the sun went down. Ran from my house on Sandstone, along Panorama, DOWN Noons Creek to Kins Market to get some celery & garlic….then back UP that LONG Hill (makes Underhill look like a “walk in the Park”)…approx. 8/9km….my watch wasn’t charged enough for the entire run. Next time I run that, I’m grabbing Terri-Lee to do that hill with me!!! I know she loves hill training!!! Lol
I hope we all took a few minutes today to remember our veterans, those that sacrificed so we can have the freedom to do things like going for a run wherever and whenever.
November 15th: On Saturday, Rod, Larry (both wearing shorts), Laura, Terri-Lee, Alex and Ivan ran while Edie and Len walked. The runners got warm by running Joe’s Trail while Edie, canine April, and Len walked part of the route, meeting the others on the way back to Cameron Centre. We started out in the chill of -3 C and you have to keep moving to stay warm! However, the sunshine was beautiful and it felt a bit warmer at the end of our run. Run time 55 min, distance 7.5 km.
On Friday, Bobtoc and Edie went for a walk around the Gilmore area, details unknown but it was a good distance. Nice to see some Cruisers on the mend and returning to activity!
November 17th: On Monday night, Rod, Larry, Terri-Lee, Jennel, Laura, Edie and her friend Darlene, and Adele met and the runners Terri-Lee, Jennel and Laura ran the Forest Grove route, down Shellmont to Arden/Greystone to SuperValu, then along Arden, Broadway, Underhill, Eastlake etc. back to Cameron Centre, time 1h 19m, distance 9.66 km. The rest of the gang walked along the Forest Grove route, dropped Adele off at her place, then continued down Underhill, along Eastlake etc. back to Cameron Centre, time 1h 25m, distance 7.5 km. It was still a bit chilly but once the combination of heat from moving and some numbness in the fingers set in, it was okay. For whatever reason, the conversation turned to food and restaurants…hmm. See y’all for a fun occasion on Wednesday!
Thanks to all those that made Bob’s recent celebration of his 80th Birthday with the Cameron Cruisers a most memorable event. I have captured some of the highlights from this wonderful event. However, the photographs do not do justice the merriment, laughs and excellent moments from this celebration. Here are the links to the photographs as posted on my Flickr site.
Once again congratulations to Bob and the Cameron Cruisers for such memorable events. Thanks for those that organized this birthday celebration. And special thanks to Bob’s bride for helping him stay active all these years!
Thanks to all who attended the sort-of surprise 80th birthday party for Bobtoc on Wednesday night at Paros Greek Taverna! In all there were 36 Cruisers, associates, and athletic supporters from past and present who had a reunion of sorts and made it a fun and special occasion, which included a Bob-on-steroids photo cake thanks to the creativity of Rod and Edie, and many laughs. “The elder chap” was very pleased to see y’all. After all that good food and fun we need to get back at it on Saturday!
November 22nd: On Saturday, we got another break in the weather in what turned out to be a beautiful fall weekend, as Larry, Terri-Lee, Ivan, René, Rick and Alex ran, while Edie and Bobtoc walked the Joe’s Trail route and back, time for runners a sizzling 50 minutes, distance 7 km, and while the walkers completed their trek, Larry, Terri-Lee, René and Ivan did an extra 4 km in 28 minutes by running along the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, and return. While out on Joe’s Trail we saw Rainy, Joe, Carla and Rosalind (hope I got that last name right) from the Bushtits, resulting of course in a chorus of “Woo hoo” .
Terri-Lee participated in the 10k Vancouver Historic Half on November 23rd.
November 24th:On Monday night, we did not manage to avoid the rain, but most of us had hip waders, so what happened was…well, no hip waders but Larry, Terri-Lee, Jennel and Alex ran to SuperValu (formerly IGA) and back, using the usual Eastlake, Underhill, Broadway, Arden route, being careful to avoid stumbling over the uneven surfaces which was difficult sometimes due to the darkness, rain and glare. We managed to get our feet soaked anyway – puddles and roots, it doesn’t get any wetter than this! Time 1h 15m, distance 9.5 km. Alex’s wife Angela was the smartest one of the group, walking inside Lougheed Mall while the four others grew webbed feet.
November 26th; Bob and Edie walked 7k from his house, through Kensington Plaza to Hastings up Burnaby Mountain to Duthie, back down a trail to Union and made our way back to Kensington Plaza using our regular running routes. We had coffee at Starbucks and walked back to Bob’s. We thought we were going to get a free smoke but, alas, the packets were empty and we were out of luck. No rain.
On Wednesday night, it was raining but not as hard as Monday, so the runners and walkers soldiered on, with runners Larry, Louise, Libby, Terri-Lee and Alex taking Eastlake, up Underhill twice – yes, hillwork is back!! Welcome those effin’ hills!! (Hills are our friends?) Then the runners returned using the Forest Grove route over the Gaglardi overpass and you know the rest, time 1h 12m, distance 7.5km.
Walkers Edie, Laura, and Howie Wong walked the Forest Grove route by taking the road past Stoney Creek elementary school, then returned for a distance of 5.42 km and time 1h 03m. So nice to see people we haven’t seen for awhile!
Report from Bobtoc: Edie and I walked from our house this Wednesday morning east on Hastings St past Duthie, not as far as Centennial Road, then returned to the house. Route followed was Heathdale to Howard, Meadedale to Parker, east to Kensington to the shopping centre to post two letters, east on Hastings St past Duthie Ave, continuing up the hill (it doesn’t get any better than this), that expression resurrected by Terri-Lee on the birthday shirt gifted to Bobtoc last Wednesday. Edie and I on the return stopped at the Starbuck coffee house at Kensington Plaza, supped our coffee, then on to final destination on Heathdale. No rain, overcast skies, temperature decent enough to sit outside quaffing the coffee. My thanks big time to Edie for driving from Coquitlam to walk with toc. Time inclusive of mail call and coffee stop, 2h 31m. Distance, not measured. Conversation and friendship, priceless.
