Happy New Year, Cruisers!

January 1st:  Edie and April walked the Resolution Run in Port Coquitlam – 5k in 50 minutes. Perfect weather for walking and beautiful scenery along the PoCo Trail.

January 3rd: On Saturday, the first run/walk of the year started out with nine walkers and runners gathering at the Centre, a great turnout on a coldish day.  We started out along Cameron with the intention of going along the Eastlake route, but it was quite icy and slippery so we headed back to Cameron to do Joe’s Trail and Burnaby Lake trails.  One of us did lose his footing and went down as Cameron turned out to be like an ice rink and as there were witnesses, a future passing of the Fallers Trophy will occur sometime.  Rod and Bobtoc walked Joe’s Trail, distance over 6 km, time 1h 20m, Len ran Joe’s Trail, distance 7.7 km, time 1h 06m, René, Ivan and Laura ran Joe’s Trail and carried on to the nature house at Burnaby Lake and returned, distance about 11.3 km, times between 1h 20m and 1h 27m, while Rick, Terri-Lee and Larry ran Joe’s Trail and around Burnaby Lake trails and return, distance 20.5 km, time 2h 50m, having to take a slow pace/walk due to the icy and slippery conditions.

January 3rd:  Christina, Edie, Tim and Darlene joined the Burke Mountain Naturalists for the Audubon bird count from 8:00 to 10:30 at Colony Farm.  A beautiful morning to enjoy nature.
On our way back beside the road, we were pleasantly surprised to see the Hydro Boxes graced with John’s beautiful nature photos.  Take a look next time you are down that way.
Monday, January 5th: RA Edie’s report on Monday evening’s “wet festivities”:  Four Cruisers “ducked” out to meet at Cameron.  Rod and Edie walked/sloshed to Underhill and Eastlake for 4.95 km in 1h 03m and Terri-Lee and Stormin’ Norman ran/sloshed 6.88 km around the Forest Grove loop in 55 and 48 minutes, respectively.  Fortunately, no one was swept away in the water running fast beside the curbs or pooling at the bottom of the hill near the Centre.

Wednesday January 7th: On Wednesday night, it was foggy but not too cold and no rain, so the runners and walkers had a good night out.  Walkers RA Edie, Bobtoc and canine April did the Forest Grove route, going past Stoney Creek school, along the Gaglardi overpass, up the big friendly Forest Grove hill, and on back to the Centre, distance 6.55 km, time 1h 18m.  Runners Stormin’ Norman, Larry, Rod, Terri-Lee, Libby and Alex ran along Eastlake, Underhill 2X, along Forest Grove, said hello to the walkers who were heading the opposite way, and returned the usual way, for Larry and Norm, distance 8 km, time 1h 03m, Alex 7.7 km, time 1h 08m, and Rod, Terri-Lee and Libby 7.7 km, time 1h 12m.  Libby warns that the hillwork will continue and gradually increase as it’s supposed to be good for us.  Remember, hills are our friends.  Easy to forget that.   The mystery faller on Saturday was me.  I took some ribbing for not disclosing that so there it is!

From Jennel: Thursday afternoon, Heather & Jennel ran from their homes and met at Pinetree & David….ran 2 laps around Lafarge Lake/Town Centre Park and back to our homes!  Good workout!!!

On Saturday morning, another good turnout to take advantage of a grey, but mild and no-precip morning, as the runners ran the Joe’s Trail route, with Laura, Rick, René and Ivan running 7.3 km in a brisk 46 minutes, while Larry and Terri-Lee did 8 km and Rod and Flora did 7.5 km, all in a time of 1h 08m.  Edie together with canine April and Bobtoc, started boot camp by walking from the Centre to the SFU area using the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, north to the entrance to the powerline trail , continued up the hill to Mel’s Trail and continued on it to the junction of Cardiac Hill trail and Mel’s Trail at which point the walkers turned back using the same route to the Centre.  Time and distance, 2h 08m,  9.63 km.   Doesn’t get any better than this!

Heather & Jennel also ran Saturday morning.  Tony dropped Jennel off at Heather’s on Shaughnessy, then Heather & Jennel ran from there around Lafarge Lake/Town Centre Park once, then up David to Panorama and up again to Sandstone, to Jennel’s home (up LOTS of hills), dropping Jennel off, then Heather made her way back home adding on another 4km to her run.  Jennel – 7.5km, Heather – 11.5km.

January 12th:  On Monday evening Bob, Larry, Edie and April enjoyed a lovely evening walk.  We did the Forest Grove route backwards, with very little BBCing about the effin’ hill, except from our leader, who was heard muttering, “I hate this route” from time to time.  Time out was 1:27 for 6.71k.
Please send running updates to Edie until further notice as the Kuhns and Terri-Lee will be Kihei Cruisers, running in Maui – taking one for the team.   Aloha!  Have fun in paradise and have a great run. 🌴🌞🏃🏃🏃🌴🌴🌺. We are not envious and will try to refrain from whining.😥

January 14th:  On a 4 degree no rain evening Terry-Lee, Libby & Laura did the Forest Grove loop – about 6.6 km, 56 min.  Terri-Lee is off to join the Kihei Cruisers today to run in warmer climes.  Good luck on Sunday, Larry and Terri-Lee.  We’ll be cheering you on under our umbrellas here in the Rain Forest. On Wednesday night, we had a pleasant surprise or two.  Eoin joined Edie & April on a walk to Production and back 3.2k and on our return, we met Shiraz.  He missed the group because of traffic but walked back with Edie and Eoin.  Nice to see returning friends!

January 17th & 18th Update:Saturday Update:

I was the only Cruiser showed up Saturday morning ( witnessed by Debra N). Ran south to Burnaby Lake South Trail. West on Central Valley Greenway to Douglas . North via Goring and Holdom to Broadway, Underhill Eastlake then back to Cameron Centre.  It was a dry and relatively warm morning. total distance covered 18.5Km . Time 2 hrs 24 min. Alex

Report from Flora: Ross and I went out for a run to Como Lake via Smith and returned via Winslow. Route was lovely even with the grub infestation in so many lawns. I did my share of shooing the crows away. Time out 1.05.    Ross and Flora
Report from Rod:

Back in Burnaby.  Didn’t get out with the crew this morning, but Pat, Brian and I walked up North Road, up the trail to SFU via Cardiac Hill, had coffee at the shopping centre and back down again. Time out about 2 hours, distance unknown.

Another Lousy Day In Paradise

Report from Maui: Terri-Lee and I completed the Maui Oceanfront Half Marathon today and we had great weather for it – nice clear sunny skies, cool temperature until about 8:30 a.m. when it started to warm up to about 23 C, and although the running route was almost completely along a highway, it was

oceanside all the way.  Terri-Lee even saw some whale action while she was running.  I looked but did not see any during the run, but saw a bit this evening as the sun set.  There were a lot of runners this year, more than the last time we did this run.  Terri-Lee’s time was 2h 32m and mine was 2h 09m.  We both did better than we thought we would.  We had a nice lunch at a beachfront restaurant in Lahaina after the race.  Of course the weather acclimatization for us has been interesting – the four athletic supporters too – so we’re doing our best in our effort to take one for the team and trying not to whine about it.

Aloha to all the Cruisers!

On Monday, Alex, Laura, Eoin, Rod, Edie and April met at Cameron on a chilly, STARLIT night.  The five walked to Underhill and back.  Only 2 of us, 3 including April, were dressed for walking but the other 3 walked anyway, Alex and Rod in shorts and Laura in too few layers.  Brrrr….The five walked our usual route to Underhill and back, 4.87k in 1:10.  It was a great evening to be out freezing our behinds off while thinking of the Kihei Cruisers watching the sunset, oh don’t get me started.
January 21st:  Hello Swabbies, Four Cruisers met at the centre on Wednesday evening, three ready to run but all four walked.  Rod, Laura, Libby, Edie and  April did the Forest Grove loop for a change.  It was another lovely evening and we did 6.6k in 1:29.  Great company.
Report from the Kihei Cruisers:
Bobtoc has been enjoying Boot Camp and is getting in some running.  While we were walking on Monday night, the Kihei Cruisers were enjoying the sunset.  Also, on Wednesday, some of the Kihei Cruisers walked about the same time as the Home Team and enjoyed more spectacular scenery (photos attached).

January 24th:  On a very wet Saturday morning, six Cruisers met at Cameron Centre.  Edie and Eoin (Wet)  walked with April to Underhill and back in 1:10 minutes, 5.2k; Rod and Flora (Wetter) did the Forest Grove loop 6.6k in about 1:05 and Laura and Rick (Wettest) ran to Super Value and back about 9.6k in about 1:20ish give or take. Despite wearing rain gear, Eoin and Edie were somewhat wet, but the others were drenched.  All were happy to be out despite the weather and enjoyed the walk or run.

Report from Kihei Cruisers:  I have been checking the Vancouver weather and you sure are getting a lot of rain this week.  The only positive is that you don’t have to shovel it.  Meanwhile, here all is not perfect – there are wave warnings so it has curtailed the paddle boarding, just when we found a better place to rent from.   Mom and dad and myself went whale-watching today and there was lots of activity.

We did eat pineapple and it was nice and sweet, so we bought another one.  Looking forward to when it ripens.
As you know, we’re just taking one for the team here.

Rod and Pat arrived Ok in Bankok about midnight.very weary. Temp here today about 33c. Pic from hotel room. Looks like a monastery.

Happy Robbie Burns Day to all Scottish heritage people and Scottish Wannabes.
January 26th:  On Monday evening, Alex, Laura, Eoin, Edie and April met at Cameron Centre and all decided to walk.  We did the Forest Grove loop for a change on a very mild night.  Time out was 1:42 for 7k.  The temperature went up to 16 in the afternoon and we had some sunshine – a little taste of Spring.

Kihei Cruisers update:  Terri-Lee and Lou are home and the others are spending their last day today and still enjoying it.

January 28th:  On Wednesday, Laura, Libby, Alex, Edie and April met at Cameron on a cool, clear evening and did the Forest Grove Loop.  Alex and Edie walked while Laura and Libby ran and walked, looping back to rejoin the walkers.  Time out was 1:26 and 6.79 for the walkers, longer for the runners.

After the run, Alex was pleased to pass on the Faller’s Trophy to Laura.  This was Laura’s first trophy.  She can take it home to show it off to her family before passing it along to Larry.  Everyone admired Rod’s craftsmanship once again.

Welcome back, Kehei Cruisers.

January 30th:  Sherian, Rachel, Christina, Alex, Edie, Laurie, Anna and Jordan met at Cameron and walked up the Stoney Creek Trail to North Road and then on to the trail to SFU, completing the walk all the way to the top.  We did Cardiac Hill!  The day was perfect with cool weather starting out and sunshine all the way.  10.5k in 2:15 hours.  Yeah!  Jordan looked so cute in his snuggly with his knitted football hat on – ready for Super Bowl Sunday.

January 31st:On Saturday morning, a large turnout was welcomed as RA Edie and canine April walked about 4 km to Production Way and back around the Cameron area in about 1 hour.  Bobtoc and Flora did a gentle run through Joe’s Trail and back, distance 7 km, time 1h 15m. René, Ivan, Larry, Laura and Terri-Lee ran along the Burnaby Lake trails to the nature house and back, distance 11.5 km, time 1h 20m, while Rick ran along with the five and then did a complete run around the Burnaby Lake trail to get his approx. 20 km distance training in preparation for his upcoming First Half in two weeks.  All the Maui Cruisers are back and really notice the comparatively cool temperatures here, but are not getting much sympathy from the others, ha ha!   A “great” welcome back for me was being presented with the Fallers Trophy from Laura who was more than willing to pass it on.  It will be on display in my living room…somewhere.   Thanks to Edie who kept the Cruiser updates going while some of us were down south!!
