View from Horizons – 500 Steps – A sunny day at last!
March 2nd: On Wednesday night, six Cruisers took advantage of the lucky weather and got our run/walk done before the wind and rain started up. Edie and canine April, and Eoin walked, while Laura, Larry, Libby and Alex walked some but mostly ran, doing the Eastlake route to Underhill, where we went up the hill twice, then continued along the Forest Grove route and back to the Centre. Distance about 8.4 km for those who ran and did some bobturns, and times ranged from 1h 15m to 1h 25m. Lots of talk about politics and the results of Super Tuesday. Interesting times we live in.
On Saturday morning March 5th, eight Cruisers plus one canine enjoyed the sun, 10 C temperature and spring blossoms to run and walk Joe’s trail. Larry and Ivan ran the 7.8 km route in 55 minutes, sprinting up Cameron at the end. Laura, Len and Flora also ran the route in a time of 1h 14m. Susan, Miriam, Edie and April walked, returning in a time of 1h 20m, while Susan left the trail at North Road to continue on to an appointment. The seven remaining athletes then headed to the White Spot at North Road and Lougheed where they were joined by Alex, Angela, Eoin and Bobtoc to celebrate Alex’s 70th birthday. Ivan came over with his son and daughter for pie and some birthday cake. Alex received a photo album of his adventures with the Cruisers at various events through the years, put together by our stellar Cruiser historian Edie. A great time was had, matching the great weather in what was the best day of the year so far.
Jennel reports on her week: Heather & Jennel & Jin ran 19km on Monday. Tuesday, Heather & her husband James walked 6km in the rain….Kudos to James! Jennel’s on a “break”, as she has Laryngitis! Heather wonders how fast the two girls could run if they didn’t talk on their runs!?! Maybe they could run a “sub 4” in the marathon!!! LOL We’re sure Jennel will have her voice back by then!!! It’s been a quiet 2 days in the Fatiguso household. However, she does know sign language!!! Where there’s a will, there’s a way to talk!!! Heather will be running solo on Wednesday for an 8km run. As of today (Saturday) Jennel still did not have her voice!
Monday March 7th: RA Edie with canine April, Laura and Eoin, Alex and Bobtoc turned out at the Centre Monday on a dry but chilly, humid evening. The five opted to walk and chose the familiar Eastlake to Underhill and return route for their exercise. Some lamentation arose over the Whitecaps’ game of Sunday afternoon. Time and distance, 1:06 and approx. 3 km. .
In Coquitlam:
Heather, Jin & Jennel met at Heather’s Monday morning on Karley/Shaughnessy to run together as a group for our “long run”. We ran down Shaughnessy , left on Prairie, then Right on Coast Meridian, Left on Dominion, along the Coquitlam Dyke (Fraser River), then along Hyde Creek and the Truboulay Trail. Weather was amazingly WET! We were dodging puddles, left, right & centre. It rained, & rained & rained some more. We all ran a total of 29km each. Long run indeed. Jennel.
Wednesday March 9th: On Wednesday night, Alex and Larry did not get the memo that there was no running that night, and showed up for the rain. As we headed out doing the Beaverbrook-Eastlake-Underhill-Forest Grove route, the rain was falling rather steadily but you know what, although we got wet it did not seem all that bad while we were running. Putting dry clothes on after the run made it better. The two hardy athletes ran the 7.5 km course in 57 minutes and 55 seconds. No walking breaks were taken. We didn’t see any other runners and saw only three other people out walking their dogs. What is it with people not wanting to be out in the rain?! We even ran up the Underhill ascention twice! There was a bit of a wind while we were at the top of the Forest Grove area but fortunately the wind didn’t really get going until after we finished our run and stretched inside Cameron Centre while watching a bit of the Canucks’ game. See, it wasn’t really all that bad.
Glad we don’t have to run in this traffic!
From Jennel and the Coquitlam Cruisers: Tuesday, Heather walked 14km with her husband James, and Heather ran Wednesday morning with Jennel for 6.5km. Jennel walked 6km Tuesday, then ran with Heather for a total of 12.5 km Wednesday. The two ladies met at Pinetree & David Wednesday morning then ran a lap of Towne Centre, then Jennel ran back to Heather’s to get her mileage in. On Thursday Heather & Jennel met at the corner of Pinetree and David on a blistering rainy morning. We ran 8 hills up Pinetree, then ran around Towne Centre once and then back to our homes. Heather ran 9.5km and Jennel ran 12km. Total km for the week…58.5km EACH!!! Way to go marathoners!!
It’s Daylight Savings Time! Yahoo!!
Monday March 14th: RA Edie with canine April, Angela, Alex, Cheryl, who we have not seen for awhile due to work hour changes, Laura and Bobtoc enjoyed gathering at the Centre in DAYLIGHT, a welcome change from the winter of dark outings. The group opted to use the Stoney Creek trail to begin their trek. Edie and Angela walked the distance to North Road before returning to the Centre; their time and distance 58 minutes and 4:04 km. Runners Alex, Cheryl, Laura and Bobtoc continued north on North to Chapman, east, crossing to Robinson Street, then south on Robinson to Ebert Avenue, west back to North Road, crossing it going west onto Cameron Street back to the Centre; their time and distance 1:23 and 6.64 km respectively. All were delighted to use a route left behind when autumn and winter came across our bows.
In Coquitlam:
On Tuesday Heather drove to Jennel’s house on Sandstone Cres. UP in Westwood Plateau. From there, the two of them ran DOWN Sandstone Crescent, around the corner, Right on Noons Creek, then DOWN more to David. Left on David (for a LONG way), right on Shaughnessy, left. on Prairie, right on Coast Meridian, then left on Rivergate, right on Ottawa, left on Dominion to the Coquitlam Dyke, then ran along the Dyke until they hit 14.5 km. Turned around and ran the same way back. However, they RAN UPHILL for a LOT of the way back! Because “what goes DOWN, must go back UP” A “nice” slow gradual incline up a mountain, then a HUGE incline up Noons Creek! Not the most enjoyable way to end a LONG run, but “we did it!”….Total run for each: 29km !!! YAHOO!!!=
Wednesday March 16th: RA Edie with canine April, , Eoin, Larry, Laura, Libby, Sherian (welcome back Sherian!) and Bobtoc met at and ran/walked from the Centre using the same route as
Monday’s, ie into Coquitlam via the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, Chapman, Robinson, Ebert and return. The seven enjoyed DAYLIGHT for much of the time out. Edie and Eoin walked to the gate at North Road on the trail and returned therefrom to the Centre. The others ran at various speeds, with Larry doubling back to increase his distance run, with his time in being 1:10. Libby and Bobtoc were last in. Distances varied as well as times in.
Edie with a few others did the 500 Steps Thursday; enjoyed great weather plus the trek itself.
In Coquitlam Thursday:
Jennel and Heather ran 8.71 km, from Heather’s house to the start of the Terry Fox run (to see how many km the distance was) then onward to the Running room to have the watch fixed, (didn’t fix it) but ended up getting some great deals on water bottles, for savings of $20.
Edie and Christina ran with the PoCo run club on St. Patrick’s Day as part of the running clinic. Everyone is Irish on March 17th.
March 19th: On Saturday RA Edie with canine April, Ivor, Larry, Laura, Rod and Bobtoc met on a spring-like, mild and no precip morning. Edie and Rod opted to walk, using the Stoney Creek trail, North Road into the SFU areas using a few trails, ended up near the Cardiac hill but not on it before returning; distance 8.5 km, plus for Rod another circa 1.5 km going out to meet on Eastlake the incoming runners. Runners Ivor, Larry, Bobtoc, plus Laura who started with the walkers, moved west using the usual but notsincelastautumn route to Kensington ice rink and return therefrom. Distance for the four, 16 km, plus another say 2 km for Laura who left the walkers to run. Little did she know she would end up at the rink before returning to the Centre. Time for Larry, 1:56, for Ivan, 2hrs, and for Laura and Bobtoc, 3.00 hours on the dot.
Here’s Rod’s Cross Training Photo with the young lads he plays field hockey with.
In Coquitlam Friday, from Jennel:
Friday’s Morning Run…Heather & Jennel met at Pinetree & David….Ran 9x up Pinetree!. a lap around Town Centre, then to Shaughnessy & David, then back to Pinetree & David where the two parted ways and back to each others’ homes; Heather 11km today, total for the week “60km”, and Jennel’s total for today, 16km, total for the week “60km” Phew!!! We’re done (for this week!)
From Viet Nam, Rod sent us the sign at the right
March 21: On Monday RA Edie, Laura, Rod, Cheryl, Alex, Bobtoc and Eoin met at the Centre on a mild no precip evening, actually the best night of the year. Cheryl had already run 12k before the run with the others. The destination was east into Coquitlam, Como Lake being the destination for the runners, a change from the winter routes closer to the Centre and street lights. Edie, Laura and Rod formed the first group; they ran to Como Lake but did not run the trail around; their distance and time were 7.34 k and 1 hr 13 min. Alex, Cheryl and Bobtoc formed the second group; they ran to the lake plus ran the trail around, adding a click to the distance, being 8.34 k, and time 1hr 35 min. In Coquitlam Monday:
The Coquitlam Cruisers, Heather & Jennel ran 32.50km Monday morning. From Heather’s home down Shaughnessey, Left on Dominion to the Coquitlam Dyke…left on the Dyke to 16km, then returned. We somehow got an extra .50km on our run!?! lol Good run, barely a sprinkle of rain, nice views, awesome company, nice route!!! We were planning of our “after marathon meal” (If we can stay awake for it!!!) LOL=
Here’s Rod’s Cross Training Photo with the young lads he plays field hockey with.
Thought you guys would like this of the team. The young guy on the left doesn’t normally play in our team. He was helping out last Saturday, so the old buggers didn’t have to run too hard.
March 23rd:
On Wednesday on a heavy rainy, blustery, certainly NOT the best night of the year, R A Edie and canine, Alex, Eoin and Laura, Larry, Rod and Bobtoc turned out at the Centre for their mid-week run, rog or walk. The route chosen was Stoney Creek trail which was very wet, soaking running shoes quickly; for walkers Edie and Eoin, to the North Road gate then reverse back to the Centre; their time approx. 50 minutes, distance 3.85 km. The runners/roggers continued to Chapman and Clarke to North Road, south on north and west into Sullivan Heights, Larry and Rod via David St. and Alex, Laura and Bobtoc via Lyndhurst St to Willoughby Ave thence to the Centre on Cameron. Time for the first two, 58 minutes, for the last three, 1:05.
On Friday, a group with Edie, Christina and Larry plus friends of Edie, 9 or 10 in all, walked to SFU from the Centre, using the powerline trail plus Cardiac Hill, had coffee, lots of conversation, before returning. Time out, approx. 3 hours. Sounds like quality time!
Jennel on Thursday ran Stoneridge 10X! Finished with a whew!

March 26th:
Notwithstanding my goof in showing a 9:00 am start Saturday from Cameron Centre, 10 Cruisers showed up at 8:00 am, our usual starting time. Thanks Larry for your follow-up email advising of the usual 8:00 am start. RA Edie, Laura, Eoin, Larry, Alex, Ivan, Susan Vedoy, Rick, Len and Bobtoc met at the Centre on a sunny with clouds, +3C morning. The ten proceeded west to Joe’s Trail. Eoin and Susan paired off to walk; Edie and Bobtoc to rog, and the remaining six to run. The six ran, crossing into Hume Park, upped Larry’s hill then proceeded north and west again along the trail leading back down by the children’s play area and swimming pool back to North Road to Cameron Street and the Centre. Edie and Bobtoc ran up Larry’s hill with Bobtoc proceeded past the Dog Area at the crest of the hill, met Edie on her way up the hill; the two then retraced their steps down the hill back to North Road, back to Joe’s Trail and the route back to the Centre. Time and distance for the four, 1:15, 9.5 km, for Edie and Bobtoc,1:15 and 9 km. Walkers Eoin and Susan came in a few minutes later. Again, Len came to the Centre astride his bike from home and returned home, 16 km on bike there and back.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Heather ran a 12km Friday, plus the Pinetree Drive hill 10x, total for the week 64km. Jennel was a little behind in mileage, but getting in what she can; ran 6km Thursday and 6.32km Friday(so far) trying to find time in between baking pies & cookies to run a couple of laps of Town Centre to make the total 64km as well, and on Saturday completed another 2 laps. But, she’s 12 km short so far, so she’ll attempt to get that in between the Easter cooking and celebrations.
There’s a nest in those trees for Blue Herons.
Seven Cruisers showed up on a beautiful Easter Monday morning Not Saturday at the Burnaby Lake parking lot. RA Edie, Christina, Rachel, Laura and Eoin, Alex who arrived late but caught up, and Bobtoc ran to Deer Lake via the Sperling-Kensington route crossing Canada Way into the Burnaby City hall and Burnaby Village area continuing south into the Deer Lake trail; continued west and south, then north where we saw a number of nests plus herons in the forested area. What a sight of birds and forest! The group then returned to the lake trail, back to Canada Way to continue back to the Burnaby Lake parking lot. Time and distance, 1:17, approx. 8 km. Debrief at Starbucks in Fortius building. Great morning. Great to be alive with good friends.
March 30th: Eight Cruisers met at the Centre Wednesday on a 20C, open skies, evening, the best of the year! Since some of those present were planning to run the Fool’s Run Sunday, options were to walk or run very gently. Eoin, Susan and Cheryl so far as I can recall walked to the North Road gate at the east end of the Stoney Creek trail and returned to the Centre. The others: Laura, Alex, Larry, Rod, and Bobtoc opted to run, call it rog, or walk, the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, east on Chapman Ave, crossing North Road to Robinson St. to Ebert Avenue thence back to the Centre via Cameron St from North Road. Times for the two groups of roggers; 1:20 and 1:25, distance approx. 7 km; for the walkers, about 40, distance approx. 3 km. A GREAT evening.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Tuesday: Heather and Jennel ran; Heather 23 km, Jennel 24.5 for the reason she forgot her house key, so ran the additional distance close to home to keep warm.
Wednesday: Heather & Jennel met and ran in the morning and ran the easier run of the two….so we just did a slow-tempo easy going 10 & 1’s …. Heather 8km, Jennel 12.71. Beautiful shorts weather today!!!
Terry Fox Run is this Sunday. We’ll both be there at the one in Port Coquitlam
