October 1st: R. A. Edie, Flora ,Larry, Laura, and Eoin, Rod and Bobtoc met Saturday morning at the Centre. Edie, Flora and Rod ran to the IGA corner but used the trail along the golf club since the trio needed the facilities at the baseball field near Squint Lake then followed the road from the golf club back to the intersection at Greystone and Burnwood then returned to the Centre; distance 10.5 km time 1:42. Laura and Larry ran to Kensington Rink and return, distance 16 km, time 2:02 Eoin and Bobtoc rogged and walked the FGD route frontwards, 6.6 km, time 1:32. Eoin demonstrated taei chi whilst waiting for the others to return. The group enjoyed cloudy skies and comfortable temperature.
Coquitlam Cruisers: Heather and Jennel ran from Heather’s home to Rocky Point pier and returned using Guilford Way. Distance 16 km.
October 2nd: Edie and Flora participated in the Run for the Cure with a few friends. 5k in 38 minutes, warm day and brunch after.
October 3rd: On Monday evening Minnesota Rachel and Bobtoc met at the Centre, opted to walk. Their route was Stoney Creek trail to North Road, south on North to Cameron Street and back to the Centre. Distance guestimated at 6 km, time 53 minutes and change. The duo enjoyed a decent temperature but darkness early.
October 5th: On Wednesday Alex, Edie with canine April, Larry and Bobtoc met at the Centre on a cloudy, autumn temperature evening, ideal for running. Edie walked from the Centre down Cameron Street to Beaverbrook to the traffic light at the high school then returned to the Centre. Alex and Bobtoc accompanied her to the traffic light then continued on Eastlake to Underhill to FG Drive, east to the overpass then back to the Centre passing the Stoney Creek Elementary School. Yes, we can do that route in our sleep. In the meantime Larry did the FG Drie route backward, met roggers Alex and Bobtoc at Underhill Avenue then reversed direction and returned with Alex and Bobtoc to the Centre. Time and distance for Larry, 1:02, and about 9 km. Time and distance for Alex and Bobtoc, 1:18 and 6.4 km respectively plus another .6 km or so for Alex.
October 8th: Rod, who is at sea on a cruise with wife Pat, would have been proud, proud to see Alex, Eoin, Larry and Bobtoc attired in shorts on a cold, very wet morning Saturday. The route chosen for the morning run was to the powerline run and beyond on Burnaby Mountain’s east face, starting from the Centre on Cameron St to the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, north to past Chapman St, hanging a left at the small Telus structure then north up up to one of the TransCanada trails, continuing for Alex and Larry almost to Cardiac hill before reversing their steps. Eoin and Bobtoc used the same route but reversed well before the Cardiac hill. Distance for Alex and Larry in the vicinity of 10 and 9 k respectively taking into account their bobturning from time to time to keep an eye on Eoin and Bobtoc. Distance for the latter two about 8 k. Time for the foursome1:39. The suggestion for the route, which we have not used for quite a while, was from an unnamed Cruiser, and a great route it was. Our thanks.
Bet wishes to Edie, Christina and Flora for their half marathon run in Spokane tomorrow and to Alex for his Turkey Trot 10k in Vancouver Monday.
October 6th to 10th – Cruiser Roadtrip to Spokane: Flora, Christina and Edie with Athletic Supporters Ross and John travelled a total of 1500k to participate in the Spokane Half.
First Stop was Leavenworth.
Also, went on a couple of beautiful walks in Leavenworth and a boat cruise in Couer d’Alene.
Christina: 2:22;42; Edie and Flora 3:08:35/36
The route took us through residential areas with historical houses in town and along trails and roads
We walked through the park back to our hotel and around downtown later. out of town, often following the river. The scenery was enhanced by the fall colours. Rain had been predicted but didn’t materialize, there was some wind and a mild temperature. Tons of volunteers with different themes at the aid stations and a pipe band and drummers along the route. Really nice shirts.
Flora trying out the Red Flyer.
On Sunday Alex ran the Turkey Trot 10k, time 1:06.
Back to Wednesday’s run from the Centre: The route chosen was to the IGA corner and return. Larry and Alex teamed up, as did Libby and Bobtoc for the most part. The first two ran faster, while Libby and Bobtoc rogged. Alex, Larry and Libby ran faster than Bobtoc, needless to say, and bobturned back to him over the course. The four experienced perfect conditions: temperature, no rain nor sprinkling while on the route, undoubtedly the best day of the year for the outing. Autumn seems to give us the best conditions for being out. Time for all, 1:51, distance for Alex, Larry and Libby, probably 10.5 km, for Bobtoc, 9.5 km.
Celebration for Libby and Bobtoc: Their run commenced the beginning of their 30th year running, having started in 1987 at the Forest Grove Elementary School, with Saturdays out of Cameron Centre. Our thanks to Donna Workman.
Saturday October 15th: Flora, Larry, and Bobtoc met at the Burnaby Lake parking lot Saturday under a heavy cloud cover sharpish at 8:00 am. The trio set off using the Central Valley Greenway route, their goal to go to Rupert St and return. Flora and Larry’s pace was faster than that of Bobtoc so they paired off with Bobtoc following. When Flora and Larry returned, Larry took a lap of the soccer-rugby fields to add an additional km or so to his distance; their time about 1:30, plus a bit for the Larry’s lap. Bobtoc’s time was 2:32, distance 13.2 km for all, plus for Larry the km for lapping the fields. The rains held off except for some sprinkling driving home. There was a marked reduction of bikers or runners on the route compared to other Saturdays; no doubt folks were apprehensive about the potential of heavy rains predicted.
Saturday October 15th, Alex volunteered and was the Team captain for the LGRR Silver Fox (50+ team). Last year we finished third and this year we finished first because we found a 50+ member to replace me. At 52, he was the youngest member in the team. I stayed at Whistler from Thursday to Wednesday last week.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
On Friday Heather and Jennel met at Port Moody Rec, Centre and ran 1 hour around the track: fair weather runners, says Jennel.
On Saturday Jennel ran solo from her home on Sandstone around Town Centre once, then to Shaughnessy and Karley Crescent, returned straight down David, up Johnson, then west on Panorama back to her home. 11km.
Monday October 17th: RA Edie, Libby and Bobtoc met at the Centre Monday evening under cloudy skies which produced no precip, and a temperature ideal for our walk/run. The route chosen was the FG Drive backwards one. The trio wogged (new word) the route, distance 6.7 km and time 1:22. The time out was thoroughly enjoyed.
From Rod Oct 16: Greetings from Costa Rica. Arrived here today. Very hot and humid. 94 degrees, but good. Heading South towards Panama Canal tomorrow. Not convinced we are into cruising like this. Too many old people. And I mean old. Hope you are all managing ok with the weather we hear about. Rod and Pat.
Coquitlam Cruisers: Jennel ran a nice easy pace Monday down Landsdowne, hopped over to the Coquitlam Crunch, stopped in at a Value Village to check out Halloween costumes, and ran back up Landsdown, total almost 10 km.
Wednesday October 19th: RA Edie, Larry and Bobtoc met at the Centre Wednesday with precip falling, although the rain ceased for almost an hour before recommencing. The trio opted to rog; Edie and Bobtoc to go to the Underhill and Broadway intersection using the Eastlake route. Larry opted for a longer session, i.e. to do the FGD route frontwards, and to run instead of rogging, commencing at the Underhill and Broadway intersection. Time and distance for Edie and Bobtoc,, 1:32 and 5.5 km respectively; for Larry, 1:15 and 7 km including some bobturns to keep an eye on the rogging duo.
Coquitlam Cruisers: Heather and Jennel did their last 10 km run Wednesday before the Rock n Roll half marathon this coming Sunday. The route was from Karley and David down Shaughnessy, then left on Prairie; 5 km, then back to Heather’s. Total distance 10 km. The two had great weather and are hoping Sunday is the same.
Saturday October 22nd: On Saturday morning Larry, RA Edie, Len, Miriam, Eoin, Bobtoc and Laura congregated at the Centre under cloudy skies but no precip. The route chosen was Como Lake except for Larry who ran to SFU using Stoney Creek trail, North Road then into the trails including the power line trail, up the hill to Cardiac Hill to the ring road, then back down on trails leading back to North Road and the Stoney Creek trail to the Centre; time 1:56, distance 15 k. To Como Lake, Edie and Len ran together to Como Lake and return; their time and distance 1:34 and 9 km. Miriam, Eoin, Laura and Bobtoc variously rogged or wogged to Como Lake, also added a lap round the lake, discovered a barred owl plus two humming birds in a tree north side of the lake. There was a time out admiring the birds, taking pictures, generally enjoying being outside in a pristine area, it also was Miriam’s first venture to Como Lake; distance about 10 k in total; Miriam and Laura were first back to the Centre, followed by Eoin and Bobtoc, their time being 2:08. Len made a kitty cat stop on the way back to Cameron.
Rock’n’Roll Half October 22nd and 23rd: Heather & I had a GREAT time on the Rock & Roll Half Marathon! We saw Lots of people, including Rainy & Joe! Great start to the morning! I think that was the BEST ORGANIZED Run yet! Everything ran smoothly and on time…..it was great!
Heather & I ran together the entire race and went through the finish line holding hand up in the air with smiles on our faces!!!
Our “Run time” was 2:17:12 (for both of us!)
Weather was perfect! The rain stopped when we got down there…it
We met some people at the Nanaimo skytrain (by my father-in-laws)….the people were running too. 2 from Dallas Fort Worth, Texas and 2 from New Delhi ……pretty cool! Marathons bring so many people together!!! We all saw each-other after the race too and said “hey, there’s our new friends from Texas!!!”
Love the friendships that are made during these runs!!!Their time, 2:17:12.
was fabulous! Bands were playing along route…. FUN day! We didn’t want to wait in line for our “free beer”, so we decided to go home after we enjoyed the live band for a while. We don’t even like beer, but it was free…..so thought we may swell…but the line up was WAY too long and we were getting cold!
Crowded for parts of the run, but that’s ok.
Alex ran both The Rock and Roll Vancouver Half marathon and the James Cunningham Seawall 10K race in Stanley Park. He got a third medal by finished both races. Way to go, Alex
Monday October 24th: RA Edie and Bobtoc showed up Monday at the Centre on a rainy, cold evening. Other Cruisers were otherwise engaged or ill. The duo quickly decided not to run taking into account the weather. Just as we were climbing into our cars, Chris Keeling and his squeeze Christina appeared on the scene. We explained to them the decision made; no problem for them since they came on foot from across Cameron St. We did take time to re-acquaint. Hopefully we shall see them again soon!
October 26th: Alex, Larry and Bobtoc welcomed Rod back from his Panamanian cruise with Pat, also Chris Keeling and his lady friend Christine Wednesday at Cameron Centre. The six enjoyed surprisingly good weather; no rain, perfect temperature. The destination for the six was the FGD route backwards. Larry, Chris and Christine ran the route, time 58 minutes, and Alex who recently ran a 10 and then a half marathon, and Rod and Bobtoc essentially walked the route, their time being 1:26, distance for all six, 6.6 km.
Coquitlam Cruisers: Heather and Jennel walked Wednesday morning in the rain for one hour and fifteen minutes and started planning for the 2017 BMO Half. Jennel later formulated a plan on running that alf Marathon May 7, 2017 in a time of 1:55 by commencing training to peak at 1:50. Good luck to her on her objective!
Saturday October 29th: Alex, Larry, Edie with canine April, and Bobtoc met at the Centre Saturday on a day which was to be, and was, busy with small kids and parents for indoor
Hallowe-en festivities in the large gym. The destination for the four was to be Mundy Park; however, other kinds of things intervened, the most significant being chum salmon swimming upstream on Stoney Creek on their way to spawn. Quite a bit of time was spent observing the fish attempting to swim in challenging shallow water against the downward-rushing resistance of the stream. A number of fish could not make it, and their remains were prominent in the creek. Talk about a lesson in nature.
The route for the four was as noted above the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, Chapman Ave to Robinson Street to Como Lake Road from which point Edie took April home, and from home Edie returned to the Centre to retrieve her car. Distance covered by Edie, 8.5 km. The remaining three continued on Robinson to Foster, east toward Como Lake. Larry wished to increase his pace so pushed on to Poirier St and returned to the Centre; his total time 1:55.. Alex pressed on to Como Lake; Bobtoc continued on Foster only to Poirier Street to the sports complex; used the “facilities” there, then started his return on Winslow to Blue Mountain Road back to Foster. Alex caught up to toc on Ebert, and from there the two returned together to Cameron Centre via North Road and Cameron Street. Tine for Bobtoc, 2:40 excluding time to use the biffy, distance perhaps 11 km. Alex’s time was closer to 2:00, distance 13+ km.
Sunday October 30th: Christina and Edie participated in the second annual Great Climate Race.
The ladybugs were fortunate that no rain fell to dampen their wings. Christina finished the 10k Seawall Run in 1:04 while Edie did it in 1:27. John was on hand as an Athletic Supporter and Photographer. Coffee at Timmy’s after.
