April 2017
At last, the cherry trees are starting to bloom….
Saturday April 1st: On Saturday morning, we finished our 30 km run in a time of 2h 15m and finalized the road crew for our club’s Ironman participants this October in Kona….April Fool! What actually happened was much less exciting than that – Rod, Larry, Flora, Susan, and Edie with canine April, walked Joe’s Trail, endured the drizzle and observed the signs of spring such as trees blossoming and some flowers showing. The Brunette River was still flowing high. The crew finished their almost 7 km walk in about 1h 42m. We said hello to Debra and Chris, as Debra was being dropped off from Chris’ sporty Mini to lead the Cameron Centre spinning class. Debra wants to know who is interested in going to Maui next year (?!).
Jennel and Heather ran almost 13 km on Thursday.
Rod went out from home Sunday morning and did the Forest Grove loop in 58.20 (about 7 km). Weather was sunny but not as warm as Mexico.
Plus, Laurie Hilborn ran the Fools Run Gibsons to Sechelt Half Marathon today, her time 2:56:13. Way to go Laurie, wish we were there instead of having to recover from various injuries!
Monday April 3rd:
Rod, nicely tanned from his holiday in Mexico with family, and Bobtoc met at and walked from the Centre Monday under sunny skies and a more or less +10C evening. The duo walked the familiar FGD route frontwards. Total time out, 1:36, including pit stops for Bobtoc, same old distance being close to 7 km.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Jennel made it out Monday morning despite the fact that she didn’t feel like it. She did “Ladder training” (speed work) around the track. Goal, 3:40 two times around a 400m track….she came close….3:46, however, couldn’t breathe afterwards and good luck if she thinks she can keep up that pace for 21km, unless she is blessed with wings on her running shoes! That’s not going to happen at that speed! So, what will be will be. New goal of hers….to finish the Half Marathon in an upright position!!! ha! ha!
On Tuesday Jennel and Heather met on David then ran 2 laps of Town Centre, then parted. Total km for Jennel, 14.5, and for Heather probably around 10 km.
Wednesday April 5th:
Wednesday evening – no rain, so it was a good time for a walk as Rod, Alex and Larry trekked the Forest Grove area, starting from Beaverbrook to Stoney Creek school, crossed the Gaglardi overpass, up the big FG Drive hill, down Underhill, along Eastlake and you know the rest of the way, distance 6.55 km and time 1h 21m according to Alex’s GPS device. Discussion topics were the recent auto show, soccer, and how our injuries are coming along, as we are all at various stages of recovery. You’ll just have to come out with us to hear the details, ha ha!
Here’s an opportunity to volunteer at the Giro di Burnaby (cycle races): If you are interested in being a Giro Hero, new volunteer recruitment will open on Tuesday, April 11th. They are looking for awesome additions to the team! Sign up will be made available at: www.girodiburnaby.com/volunteering
April 8th: On Saturday morning, as it was raining, the Cruisers in attendance decided to have a strategy session at Tim Horton’s at Cameron and North Road. Most of the group walked from Cameron Centre to Tim’s, about 0.5 km. Rod, Larry, Susan, Edie, Laura and Eoin, who was prepared for activity wearing shorts, enjoyed conversation over coffee and tea. Flora chimed in via text message. We are looking forward to some better weather, not that we’re asking for a drought, just the odd day with a wee bit of sun like today…
Sunday’s Up the Creek Run results:
10 K Christina Saremba 1:00:57, 3rd in her age group, great run time Christina!
Also congrats to the Terry Fox Run participants who ran/walked today.
Monday April 10th: On Monday evening Edie, Alex and Rod swam and snorkeled their way round the Forest Grove loop while April dog paddled. To the Cruisers that didn’t come out “Good on Yer” you were a lot smarter than the three of us. Probably the worst night of the year. Time out 1h30, distance the usual 7 km.
Rod
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Jennel reports she ran only 39.07 km last week.
On Sunday Jennel ran 16.50 km ….down David, to the mall, cut through and made way to Westwood, to running room, a coffee, then back stopped at Starbucks and back home! I sure hope they have a coffee stand on the BMO; makes the run more pleasant!
April 12th: Wednesday night saw Larry, Eoin, Rod and Alex, with the latter two not quite fully dry from Monday night, go for a walk starting along Cameron, to Beaverbrook, Eastlake, Underhill, Forest Grove etc. which was the reverse way of what Rod ran earlier in the day. Amazingly it did not rain while the foursome were out (although it did monsoon later!) so it was a welcome break to get outside while it was dry. Distance, close to 7 km and time approximately 1h 20m. Rod’s earlier run was 10 km in about 1h 20m. Nice to see that someone in our group is able to run!
On Tuesday Jennel ran 6.52 km around Town Centre Track while her daughter was playing field hockey. She was alone, but “saw a runner in a blue Best Buy T-Shirt” and he looked like a good runner…so tried to keep up with him! Good grief!?! She thinks he was an Olympic athlete! My goodness, he kept a FAST pace. She kept up behind him for one lap, then decided she’d let him “take the lead” Ha! ha! She continued running around the track doing some speed training and then just casual running. On Thursday morning Jennel ran 13km around Town Centre twice and back home, (ran every day this week to have a “run-free” weekend)….busy with Family! So the total of the week came to 42.02 km. Happy Easter Everyone !!!!
April 15th: Saturday morning saw six Cruisers and one canine Cruiser take advantage of a rare rainless morning. Len and Alex mostly ran, while walkers Larry, Gillian, Rod, and Edie and April took the Cottonwood Ave. route to Como Lake, where most of the group did one lap around the trail, then we all headed back using mostly Foster Ave. The landscape in the part of Coquitlam close to the Skytrain is changing rapidly – highrises, townhomes and rowhouses. Len’s distance was 10.2 km, time 1h 41m, Alex’s distance around 9 km, same time, while the walkers travelled approximately 9.5 km in times varying between 1h 35m to 1h 45m. We enjoyed the lack of rain and are hoping for more of the same!
Happy Easter everyone.
April 17th: Monday morning at Rocky Point got a good turnout – 10 human Cruisers and 2 dogs! Len and running friend Deborah Colvin rode their bikes to Rocky Point, about 17 km, then ran the Rocky Point trail, along Alderside up April Road to Ioco Road, then out to the “pearly gates” at the Ioco Refinery where they saw three big deer, then returned, stopped at the coffee and ice cream store, and then another 17 km bike ride home. Run time was 1h 45m, distance 11.8 km. Now that’s some exercise! Rod and Flora jogged along the trail, Alderside to April Road and Ioco, and returned, time just under 2 hours while Larry, Laura, Gillian, Alex and his son’s dog walked the same route, time 2 hours, their distance 9 km+. Eoin and Edie and her dog April walked the trail to the beach area just before Alderside and returned, their time about 1h 40m, distance about 5 km. As has become tradition, we sampled the ice cream at the store by the pool. Plus – again, it did not rain, making the morning enjoyable.
P.S. Let me know if you would like to have lunch next Sunday, perhaps at the Bby Mtn golf course, after the Sun Run, at 1 pm (as the run starts at 9 am), and I will make a reservation.
April 19th: On Wednesday evening, Larry, Laura, Eoin, Rod, Flora, Edie and canine April were lucky again with the weather, as it did not rain while we were out, although it was a tad chilly but who are we to complain? We walked the along the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, then Edie, April, Laura and Eoin returned to Cameron, distance about 2.5 km, time about 45 minutes. Larry, Rod and Flora continued up North Road to Chapman, to Clarke, admired the Burquitlam station and rejuvenating Burquitlam shopping centre, speculated on which lowrise would be the next to be bulldozed, inspected various new construction projects along the route, and returned to Cameron via Sullivan Heights. Distance about 7 km, time 1h 20.
April 22nd: On Saturday morning, a strategy session was held at Tim Horton’s for the Sun Runners Rod, Alex and Flora, with Larry, Bobtoc, Laura, Eoin and Susan also in attendance. Lunch at Burnaby Mountain Golf Course restaurant at 1 p.m. after tomorrow’s Sun Run.
On Easter Monday Jennel got in a 4 km run around the swings at the Park, running around in circles with daughter Sofia as she was riding on her bike…Jennel was rather dizzy after that….but hoping that wore off one piece of pie that she ate for Easter!?! LOL Tuesday morning Heather & Jennel met along David, then ran 2 laps of Town Centre and returned back home…Jennel ran 13 km total…Heather…EST – 10 km Good run for both ladies!!!
Wed. evening Jennel walked 4 km in the morning, then went to Town Centre Track in the evening and ran 4.28 km (total 8.24 km)….Heather then joined Jennel Wed. evening with her dog Burrows and they walked around Lafarge Lake. A nice spur of the moment tapering event! Jennel’s daughter was playing field hockey and the team of girls loved seeing Burrows the Dog!!! He was the big hit of the evening!!! Thursday run: Heather & Jennel met at Pinetree & David, then ran 2 laps of TC Park….12.30 km each….Pro-d day Friday so we got all our runs in the week. Weather was beautiful!!! Good thing we missed the downpour of rain in the afternoon! Jennel ran a total of 33.58 km this week tapering down for the BMO!!! Soon approaching!!! YAHOO!!! Good to see that some of the Cruisers are able to run at this time.
April 23rd: On Sunday, the Sun Run experienced some good luck with the weather – no rain – and was challenged and conquered by five Cruisers, results below:
Alex Lau 1:06:31
Flora Johnson 1:27:24
Norman Lum 55:47
Rod Hargreaves 1:14:54
Pat Hargreaves 1:04:32
Congratulations to all! Afterwards, Rod, Pat, Flora, and Norman were joined by Ross, Larry, Cheryl Davies, Eoin and Laura for a bite at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Club, where we enjoyed the food while it poured rain outside. (Last year, we ate outside in the warm sun!!) Good to catch up with Stormin’ Norman and Cheryl.
No report from anyone about Monday night.
Jennel was busy though! She did a little longer run than planned on Monday morning. She ran 14.50 km….her daughters are going to be flower girls in a family member’s wedding….so why not run around Coquitlam to look for a dress!!! LOL That is exactly what she did! Found some lovely dresses though! On Tuesday, Heather & Jennel “ran” 12.74 km. Mostly running, but they did go to the mall to purchase a few items & have a Starbucks coffee…then walked/trotted home. So a fun run!!!
On Monday night, Edie with canine April, Laura, Eoin and Bobtoc walked 47 minutes only.
Tuesday April 25th: Libby, Edie and Maureen visited the Chilliwack Tulip Festival. Even though it was cool, the tulips were beautiful. We had lunch and a walkabout in Yarrow – very nice little town and good cafe.
April 26th: On Wednesday night, Bobtoc, Rod and Larry walked the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, distance 4 km, time 57 minutes. Prior to starting the walk, it started raining, so Larry and Rod got their brollies out of their cars and it stopped raining, true story, confirming the theory that if you are prepared for rain it won’t happen (?!).
Rod’s planned golf on Thursday cancelled, so he went out and ran the Forest Grove loop from home. Distance 7.25 km, time 58:45.
Jennel is resting up for the BMO Half, and plans on walking to keep limber. She ran over 534 km training for it!
More noteworthy Sun Run times:
Sherian Kelly 1:04:00
Carla Castellani 1:03:26
Rainy Kent 47:25 3rd in her age group! Way to go Rainy!
Joe Turtle 1:07:40
Plus: 6 men and 6 women between ages 85-89 completed the run. One woman between 90-94 completed the run. Totally awesome.
Laura, Susan, Rod, Larry, Ivan, Alex, Flora and Bobtoc met at the Centre on dry but overcast Saturday morning. The group walked for the most part, using the route from the Centre west on Eastlake to Underhill, Broadway, north onto Arden-Greystone, hung a right onto Shellmont, continued through to the lane, crossed Cinnamon Drive to the Primrose Hill trail down to Forest Grove Drive to the Gaglardi pedestrian overpass, past the Stoney Creek School and you know the rest of the way back to the Centre. Distance and time, 10k and 1:54 respectively. A good time had by all.
Coquitlam Cruisers: From Jennel: So much for resting! I’ve tallied up all the km for my WALKS & runs this weeks and its accumulated to 49.8km!!! WOW! That’s because I drove nowhere!!! I’ve only ran a couple of times and very slowly…the rest have been walking the girls to & from school and all their track & field events! (& Starbucks) lol This week will be the same…getting excited for the big day!!!
April 26th:
Christina Saremba receives the 2017 PoCo Award for “Environmental Protection and Enhancement” by Victoria Otton
“Christina Saremba volunteers extensively with BMN, Friends of DeBoville Slough and Colony Farm Park Association, contributing her organizational and technical expertise, passion and vision.”
These were the words recognizing Christina at the PoCo Volunteer Awards gala at the Giggle Dam on April 26th. She was nominated by four local societies: BMN, Friends of DeBoville Slough, Colony Farm Park Association and the Maple Creek Streamkeepers for her volunteer work. Below is an extract of Christina’s nomination from BMN:
Christina joined BMN in 2010 and quickly became a very active volunteer. One year after joining, she was elected to our Board. Most recently, she served a 2 year term as our Vice President and has now become our Volunteer Coordinator, a new position created specifically for her to take advantage of her special talents.
One of Christina’s greatest strengths lies in organizing and working with other volunteers. Through her previous experience working with other non-profits, she brings a tremendous knowledge of how to build and strengthen volunteer-driven societies such as ours. She and her husband developed a membership survey and then led our Board through a visioning process to allow us to function more effectively and incorporate the survey’s results into our long-term planning.
Christina has worked to make BMN a more resilient group by developing manuals for running most of our activities. Another very valuable project she has undertaken has been to gather years of expertise from some of our more senior volunteers and compile this information into useful “how-to” nature booklets. Thus, we have now produced booklets on building nest boxes for local common birds (21 pages) as well as a guide for annual nest box maintenance. She is currently working on guides for assessing and monitoring bats in the Tri-Cities and for rearing mason bees. These guidebooks are posted to our website (www.bmn.bc.ca) so that anyone has access to the information. In this manner, Christina has greatly enhanced our community outreach.
Our monthly public meetings (which are advertised and open to the public) are one the main ways in which we engage with members of the public. Christina is a very competent and unflappable audio-visual person at these meetings – we know we can count on her to ensure our guest speakers never encounter problems with their PowerPoint presentations. She has also organized several boat trips and other nature outings for BMN, helps with cleaning our 250 nest boxes every spring, and plays a major role in running our annual Silent Auction where we raise funds for local nature-related charities.
Christina has been the driving force behind the production of BMN’s colorful nature guidebook for children called “Discover Nature in the Tri-Cities” which was released in the spring of 2015. This 40-page guidebook (available in free printed copies and for download from our website) describes eight local parks and provides a trail map plus drawings of the plants and animals that may be encountered during visits. This guidebook is intended to be an introduction to local nature for families
in the Tri-Cities.
BMN received a large portion of the funding for this guidebook from the Ottawa Street branch of the TD Bank in Port Coquitlam. Christina offered to spearhead the development and publication of the guide. This was a clearly a project in which she could offer her special skills. Christina assembled a knowledgeable team of nature writers from among our membership and prepared requests for proposals which clearly outlined the requirements for a professional editor, illustrator and graphicslayout. She interviewed all the candidates and drew up their contracts. She also led the team of BMN members who served as the writers for each park area and who continued to provide feedback to Christina on a number of other related matters. This team of volunteers and contracted specialists met on a regular basis for almost two years. These meetings were chaired by Christina who provided the Minutes and diligently followed up with everyone to maintain an appropriate timeline. She also contacted local school teachers whose classes were given the opportunity to review early drafts and provide feedback.
The total budget for this project was about $12,000 which makes it BMN’s most costly project to date. Christina kept track of the finances and reported back to the BMN Board on a regular basis. As the project reached completion, Christina spent hours to ensure any errors in the guidebook were eliminated. Members of the team who worked with her were thoroughly impressed by the professionalism that Christina brought to this project. It is quite fair to say that, without Christina’s professional guidance, BMN would have had great difficulty in bringing this project to fruition. Christina has also been involved in promoting and distributing the guidebook to local libraries and schools. She is currently tracking its use and would like to see it used more extensively by new residents to the Tri-Cities area especially those for whom English is a second language.
Christina hopes that her award will promote awareness of the “Discover Nature” guidebook for families in Port Coquitlam (and beyond) to enjoy.
April 29th: Laura, Susan, Rod, Larry, Ivan, Alex, Flora and Bobtoc met at the Centre on dry but overcast Saturday morning. April 30th: Christina completed the MEC Fort Langley Half in 2:30 – This is a fantastic scenic course along the Trans Canada Trail which is a combination of trail and road. The Half Marathon starts in Pitt Meadows and goes over the Golden Ears Bridge and finishes in Fort Langley.
