Monday: Flora, Rod, Edie and April meandered along the Forest Grove loop, starting at 7:35 and finishing at 9:35. A little cloudy and gray at times but a nice walking temperature. Only drawback was no coffee shop en route.😐
July 5th:
Rod checked in at Cameron Centre Wednesday at 6:30 pm, saw neither familiar faces nor automobiles so motored back home. He is nursing an injury in any event, so chose to use discretion and keep off his leg.
Cruisers RA Edie, Flora, Larry, Alex and Angela, Bobtoc, plus Howie Wong and Rachel Fouladi sat together at the Giro di Burnaby instructional and dinner meeting Wednesday at the Confederation
Seniors building on a hot, clear evening where the large group enjoyed a dinner offered by several Heights food providers. Those meetings offer wonderful opportunities to meet and greet folks we know and have known over the years. The meeting was the necessary precursor to the 11thGiro di Burnaby races taking place July 13 on Hastings Street in Burnaby Heights (used to be Vancouver Heights). Rainy Kent was her usual competent self in providing instruction to the teams of volunteers.
July 8th: lora, Laura, Larry, Sherian and johnny come late Bobtoc met at Rocky Point on Saturday morning under perfect conditions for a run/walk: an ideal temperature, some cloud cover, and of course great companions. The five set off to walk mainly on the usual route from Rocky Point to the trail leading to the beach on the north side, continuing on Alderson Road to April Road and returned. Time between 2:05 and 2:11, distance 10k.. The five were joined at Rocky Point by Rod who has an injury in the hip area. The six then reported in to the ice cream shop for a debriefing, and observation of gallons and gallons of ice cream being carted into said ice cream parlour.
July 10th:
Alex, Laura, Rod and Bobtoc met Monday at the Centre and decided to walk the FGDrive route frontwards. The foursome enjoyed perfect conditions; temperature ideal, a non-threating cloud cover, and of course great company. At the playground at Cameron Centre on the way out we encountered Ivan who was there with his two kids, and thereafter at Broadway and Underhill, met Chris Keeling on his way home from the community garden which is situated near Stoney Creek School. Also enroute Rod and Bobtoc stopped and patted a 10 month old male terrier accompanied by his owner. Time and distance, 1:41 and 6.9 call it 7 km respectively.
July 12th: Flora, Larry, Rod and Bobtoc on Wednesday evening walked from the Centre to and used the Stoney Creek trail. The four turned north on North Road to Chapman Avenue. Flora opted to walk the hill from the trail to Chapman Avenue four times before returning solo on Stoney Creek trail back to the Centre. The male trio continued east on Chapman Avenue to Clarke into North Road, then walked south on North Road back to Cameron Centre via Cameron St. Distance for the trio, approx. 6 km, probably the same for Flora, since the four reconnected at the Centre at about the same time, giving the four a time of approx. one hour thirty minutes.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
From Jennel: Well, our Italian Cousins are leaving tonight, We had great adventures ALL over Vancouver. Wednesday morning we finished off their trip with the Coquitlam Crunch! They did GREAT! They LOVE Vancouver!!! We have walked and hiked ALL over!!! So I’ve clocked on MANY km. However, I have probably eaten that amount in Pasta & drank that amount in wine!!! (Filippo is a chef in Italy and they own their own restaurant,,,,,so we got some first class service at home!) Lovely time:)
They want Heather & me to find a Marathon in Italy now, and come!!!
July 13th: Alex, Angela, Rachel F, Larry, Bob, Edie and Flora volunteered for the Burnaby di Giro. It was a perfect afternoon and evening and the event went well. Alex and Angela were in charge of barricades, Larry and Rachel did fencing and Larry looked after the pedestrian crossing – quite
a challenge – and Edie, Flora and Bob did parking lot duty. Lots of sway – t-shirt, buff, scarf, lunch and a gift certificate to Whole Foods.
The Giro di Burnaby:
The 10th annual Giro di Burnaby cycle races on Hastings St in the Heights were once again flawlessly conducted Thursday July 13, under the leadership of Rainy Kent with many veteran and newbie volunteers necessary to conduct such an operation, consisting of three separate cycle races for youth, women and men. Again, cyclists from many countries were registered for and competed in the races, although none from Colombia this year. Kudos big-time for the expertise of Rainy and the many volunteers who keep on coming back for this cycling event plus the Super Save suppliers of the fencing, who, with the volunteer fencers, set up and collapsed the fences and barricades in record time. Hastings St was back in action about 10 pm..
July 15th: On Saturday morning, Flora, Alex and Larry walked various trails around Mundy Park, enjoying the fine weather and shade within the trails. Afterwards we walked to Mundy shopping centre for refreshments and met some friends of Flora’s.
Distance about 9 km, time 2h 30.
Rod did the Forest Grove/Shellmont loop backwards, starting at Cameron Centre. Part walking with occasional 100 yard jogs, it went well and no serious after effects so far. Time out 1h 28, distance 8.3 km.
Also on Saturday, Jennel ran/hiked/walked 10.69 km. Multi-tasking run/walk/hike…Starbucks, Crunch, shopping!!! It was HOT!!!! Got my FREE birthday coffee!!! (Her birthday is actually today (Sunday)!!!)
July 17th: RA Edie with April, Laura, Eoin, Alex, Rod and Bobtoc chose to walk from the Centre west to theStoney Creek trail to North Road, from which Edie, Laura and Eoin returned to the Centre. Alex, Rod and Bobtoc continued south on North Road to Tyndall Street, hung a left at Como Lake Road to Clarke Road, then to Smith Avenue , west back to North Road, continued south, turned west on Casewell St. to Willoughby Avenue, south to Cameron St. back to the Centre. Distance, 4.5 km, time a leisurely 1.19. Distance of the first trio on Stoney Creek, less than the male trio, time less also since they had left the Centre before the three gents returned. Weather, great.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
On Monday night, Jennel’s family took a 6km walk up and around our surroundings…stopped in all the neighbours trying to find the home of a lost cat (who has been hanging out on our patio). Met all our neighbours, then walked part of the Coquitlam Crunch. Found the home, but apparently everyone knew of this cat…he’s been quite the Tom Cat.
July 19th: Wednesday late pm saw RA Edie, Sherian, Alex, Bobtoc, the Coquitlam Cruisers Jennel Fatiguso, HeatherTecson with their husbands Tony and James respectively, plus the Fatiguso daughters Anamaria and Sofia. The run/walk 20 Minute Challenge sponsored by the Poco Running Room provided the opportunity for a great reunion of the parties involved. Most walked, allowing time to reminisce; so much so, with the exception of Sherian who motored on with the runners, but reconnected back at the store. The reunion was great; the Fatiguso daughters wonderful, bright, happy; Anamaria is becoming a runner in her own right, and Sofia is a happy kid; why not? Has great parents. Father Tony showed on his Iphone a video of Anamaria running in a school race; that kid is, no pun intended, going places! All in all, a good time!
Meanwhile back at the Centre, other Cruisers met:
On Wednesday evening Rod and Larry met at the usual time (6:30 pm) at the usual place (Cameron Centre) and walked the Forest Grove route starting along Beaverbrook, Stoney Creek school, across the Gaglardi overpass, up the big hill on Forest Grove, down Underhill to Eastlake and the usual way back. Nice cooler evening weather, time 1h 16, distance 7 km, inspired by those who travel at a slightly faster pace. Flora and Ross were going cycling but we did not see them while we were out.
Flora reported:
In an attempt to not pound the road with the sore feet, Ross and I biked down to Cameron Rec. centre. We missed the cruisers by half an hour.
We then rode along Still Creek trail to North Rd, walked the mountain bikes up North Rd to Chapman, then Robinson to Smith. We found our way to Edie, Tim and April for a visit and chocolate before riding back home. Distance-approx. 9-10km I think. Flora and Ross
July 22nd: Laura, Larry, Rod, Susan and Bobtoc met at the Centre and walked west to the north trail of Burnaby Lake but did not go as far as the parking lot or the green garbage can on the south side of the trail before turning back to return to Cameron Centre. Much laughter for the morning! Time and distance, 2:16 and 10.75 km respectively.
July 24th:Laura, Mary McNicol and Bobtoc on Monday evening walked from Cameron Centre the oh so familiar FG Drive route backwards. Mary set a good pace for Laura and Bobtoc, doing the route of 6.8 km in 1.25. The trio enjoyed a perfect temperature, a few dogs leading their owners, and good conversation.
July 26th: Larry, Laura, Sherian, Susan and Bobtoc walked from the Centre into Coquitlam using the familiar Stoney Creek trail, North Road to Chapman Ave, Robinson St., but then hung a left onto Egmont St. and discovered Miller Park, a site the size of four soccer pitches, the Miller School, and another structure under construction consisting of its steel skeleton. In the midst of houses. The five oohed and aahed, then returned to Robinson St to proceed south to Ebert Ave. and from there proceeded back to North Road, then Cameron St back to the Centre. Distance and time, guestimate 8 km and 1.43 respectively. Weather, perfect.
On Tuesday evening Jennel ran loops around the kids playground while both daughters were on their bikes. 4km total!!!=
On Wednesday morning Jennel ran 10km up & down the Coquitlam Crunch! HOT out! Someone passed me a card that read: Coquitlam Crunch Challenge: Saturday, September 9th from 7am-1pm. * Make it or Break it 4-Hour challenge.
July 29th: On Saturday morning, Bobtoc, Flora, Larry and Susan started out on a beautiful summer morning on the Stoney Creek trail, then turned back with Bobtoc to the Centre, where the three were encouraged to continue on, so they proceeded along the back of the library trail, took a shortcut to Sullivan, then Willoughby to Lyndhurst, crossed North Road to Cottonwood, walked along to Robinson, then Smith to Porter and Grover. Flora contacted Edie since we were in the neighbourhood, so we doubled back along Como Lake Ave. to Hailey St. and Grover, and visited Edie for awhile. Edie is recovering but not yet fully recovered. Thanks Edie for your hospitality! The three then continued back along Grover, Guiltner, Smith Ave. to Robinson, then Ebert to North Road and back to Cameron. Time for the three was 3.5 hours and distance about 8 km.
Bobtoc continued from Cameron Centre, went east and south to Willoughby Ave., crossed North Road at the Burquitlam Funeral place, continued east on Ebert to Robinson St., continued south to Appian Way, then Ivy Avenue to Whiting St., south to Cochrane Ave, west to North Road to Cameron St. then on to the Centre. Time 1.5 hours, estimated distance 6.5 km. Showered at the Centre, thanks Burnaby taxpayers!
July 31st: Alex, Flora and Botoc showed up on a steamy early evening Monday at the Centre. Before the trio set out for a walk/run, Alex had already run 5.2 km in 33 minutes, then joined the
other two. The plan of the trio was to confine their outing to the oh so familiar Stoney Creek trail due to the heat of the day, the temperature then being in the vicinity of +25C. As it happened, Flora suggested we, and we did do, hang a left on the first trail along the Stoney Creek trail, and used a bridge over the Creek which led to trails on the other side, all in good condition save for a patch which had exposed root systems of large trees. The trails were at stream level, and were identified as spawning grounds for salmon. Most of us should recall the scenes of chum salmon swimming last fall to their spawning grounds. The trio then returned to the main trail, continued their journey to the gate at the North Road end, and returned to the Centre. Distance and time, 4.6 km and 1.22 respectively. See the email sent concurrently with photos taken by Flora showing scenes of the newly-discovered trail.
On their return to the Centre they found RA Edie and Tim revamping our bulletin board completely with new larger photographs of Cruisers at various events. Edie retains the outmoded, for want of a better term, photos. She must have a large collection of photos of Cruisers events. What would we do without her? Our thanks big time to Edie!
