October 31 – Happy Halloween!

Saturday morning was a bit chilly (2C) but it was a glorious sunny day and the walking warmed up the Cruiser group of Kevin, Alex, Flora, RA Edie, Barry and canine Bebe, and Larry as we walked at Rocky Point, using the lower trail for part of our walk, then we switched to the paved trail and continued along Alderside to the intersection of Ioco and April Road, and returned the same way, using the paved trail on the way back.

Distance was 9.5 km, time was 2h20 or so.

We enjoyed coffee and ice cream at the Rocky Point Ice Cream store. Pajo’s fish and chips appeared to be closed for the season.

Stay tuned for details to come of a Cruiser dinner, likely the third or fourth Wednesday of November! Have a happy and safe Halloween.

On Wednesday evening, it was a beautiful autumn night, and again the expected rain did not materialize while the Cruisers were out walking. We’ve been having good luck lately! Alex, Kevin, Brenda, Glenn and Larry walked along Beaverbrook, Eastlake, up Underhill, along Forest Grove and down to the Gaglardi overpass, back to Beaverbrook and back to the Centre.

Distance was 6.7 km and time was 1h25.

Bobtoc and Marie were at the Whitecaps game at BC Place. The Whitecaps beat Minnesota 2-1 and are in the hunt for a playoff spot with two games to go. Go Whitecaps!

Monday evening’s expected heavy rain held off for the Cruisers yet again! Well, there was some minor sprinkling of rain every now and then, but overall it was a good evening to be out.

Larry, Kevin, Brenda and Glenn walked along Cameron, Beaverbrook, Eastlake to Underhill and returned the same way.

Distance 5 km and time 55 minutes.

On Saturday morning the expected rain monsoon was delayed again, so Cruisers Kevin, Alex, Larry, Ivan and canine Lulu lucked out in their activities. Ivan and Lulu said hello to us and went to play with another dog, while the group walked along Joe’s trail to North Road and returned the same way, this time somehow missing waiting for a train at the train crossing at Cariboo and Government St.

It turned out to be a good morning to be out, fairly mild, and no rain until the end when we turned into Cameron Centre, when it started drizzling a bit.

Distance about 8 km and time 1h45.

On Wednesday evening, again the expected rainstorm didn’t happen and in the pleasant autumn weather Kevin, Alex, Bobtoc, Larry, René, Glenn and Brenda walked the Forest Grove route starting along Beaverbrook and across the Gaglardi overpass, up the Forest Grove hill all the way along to Underhill, then down Underhill to Eastlake and back to Cameron Centre.

Distance was 6.8 km, time for Larry, René, Glenn and Brenda was 1h09, and for Alex, Kevin and Bobtoc was 1h46.

On Monday evening, RA Edie, Bobtoc, Larry, Alex, Kevin, Susan, Brenda and Glenn enjoyed no-precip weather and walked along Cameron, Beaverbrook, Eastlake to Underhill, and returned the same way.

Distance for all was about 5 km and walking times ranged from 1 hour to 1h08.  Much more pleasant than Saturday’s rain for sure.

Saturday morning’s steady rain greeted Cruisers Alex, Kevin, RA Edie, René and Larry as they showed up at Cameron Centre.  As the rain got heavier, a shortened walk was agreed to, and René wisely departed for other, more sensible activities.  The remaining fearsome foursome continued onwards, walking the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, returning via Rathburn Drive and back onto the trail, then upwards along Norcrest Court, Noel Drive, Lyndhurst, Willoughby, Morrey Court and to the IHOP at Lougheed Mall for breakfast, then back to the Centre.

Distance was 5 km and walking time was 1h20.  The creek running along the trail was at its highest water level in recent memory and was rushing down at a pace rarely seen before, no doubt due to the heavy rain.  Not the best day to be out but we did it!

On Wednesday evening, it was sometimes drizzling, but we did beat the pouring rain! Alex, RA Edie, Glenn, Brenda, René, Kevin, and Larry walked along the trail at the east end of Cameron Park, through to Sullivan, Willoughby, Lyndhurst elementary school, down Stoney Creek St., along Norcrest Court, then a turn through Stoney Creek Court, up onto Noel Drive, and along Beaverbrook and Cameron streets back to the Centre.

Distance 3.5 km and time 47 minutes per Alex’s stats.

From Jennel: Well, today Heather drove to Jennel’s and the two of them went for an “unBEARable” walk together! Gosh, just as Heather drove up to the driveway, a nice BIG BLACK bear was lingering up the street. Heather & I then decided to walk the OTHER way after the bear was gone.

We took a nice brisk walk down Panorama behind Aspenwood school, to Heritage Woods. Then walked back and up the crunch a bit…heard some rustling in the bush (I thought it was a bird)….Heather looked over and it was another BEAR! Brown this time. Gosh, we did a FAST 180, and went back to Jennel’s for some Apple Pie!!!! LOL….Wise decision indeed!!! Guess we better bring our bear whistles out with us these days!?!

That same morning, Tony was walking the dogs and Nellie saw the Bear and pulled herself free from Tony and chased the bear down the street!!! (then Heather & I walked the other way!!!) Eventful morning!!!!

Watch out for the bears, y’all!

World Cup soccer qualifying update: Big win for Canada over Panama on Wednesday evening – score was 4 to 1 for the Canadian lads! Home games coming up in November against Costa Rica and Mexico.

October 10

On Saturday morning, Len with Jax, Flora, Larry and Kevin met at Cameron Centre and walked down Cameron to the overpass and down to the trail between Eastlake and Government, walked along Government, were slowed by a train crossing, then down Cariboo Road and on to the Burnaby Lake trails, where we met Alex, who had parked in the lot on Avalon St.

The group then continued along the Bby Lake trails to the nature house, stopped to see the ducks, then returned to Cameron Centre.  Alex then walked back from the Centre to the Avalon St. parking lot.  It was a cloudy, coolish morning, but we beat the rain – as the Cruisers usually do.

Distance for all was 8.4 km and time was 2h11 (thanks to Alex for the stats!).

Eoin and Laura say hello and Happy Thanksgiving to all the Cruisers!

October 7

On Wednesday evening, Larry, Bobtoc, RA Edie, Alex, Brenda, Glenn, René and Kevin tried a newish route, walking through Cameron Park on the east side and along Morrey Court and through to Willoughby, up Lyndhurst to North Road, down Still Creek Ave., back and forth along Norcrest Court, to Noel Drive and along Noel to Beaverbrook and Cameron and back to the Centre.

Distance was about 4.5 km and time 50 minutes.  It turned out to be a clear autumn evening, surprisingly again no rain, and dark by 6:45 or so.

Soccer update: Men’s World Cup qualifier result tonight – Canada 1, Mexico 1, game played in Mexico – great result for Canada.  The Canadian lads were up for the Mexican challenge!

October 5

On Monday evening, Larry, Bobtoc, Alex, Edie, Glenn and Brenda walked the Stoney Creek trail while it got dark, but only one way – Larry, Edie, Glenn and Brenda walked along the trail to North Road, then turned back and met Alex and Bobtoc at the entrance to Norcrest just off the trail by Como Lake Road, and the group walked up Stoney Creek Place and along Norcrest Court to Noel Drive, stopped by at Rod’s house and said hello to him, then followed Noel to Beaverbrook, Cameron and back to the Centre. Distance for Alex and Bobtoc, about 4 km, and for the rest of the group about 4.5 km, and time for all was 1h10. It got dark before 7 pm, but we all had the necessary lights and reflective gear. The weather was sunny before dusk.

From Jennel: Jennel ran with her dogs on Sunday, then on Monday she and Heather ran 10 km for the Run for the Cure. See photo below

October 2

On Saturday morning, RA Edie, Alex, Larry and Kevin met at Cameron Centre and walked along Joe’s trail to the gate to North Road, and returned, distance 8 km and time 1h40. It was surprisingly a nice day (meaning no rain of course) and we enjoyed the changing colours of the leaves, starting to show in all shades of yellows and reds. After our walk, we said hello to Debra Nicol, who we haven’t seen in perhaps a couple of years, as we saw her in the parking lot at Cameron Centre – Debra has resumed teaching spin classes at Cameron. She says hi to all the Cruisers.

Len, Miriam and Flora were at the Ride for Refuge – we hope things went well for them.

All the best to Jennel, Heather and everyone else at the Run for the Cure on Sunday.
