November 30

On Monday night, RA Edie, Glenn, Brenda, Kevin and Larry took advantage of the no-rain evening and walked along Beaverbrook, crossed the Gaglardi overpass, went up Forest Grove Drive to Underhill, down to Eastlake and back to the Centre along Beaverbrook. While walking along Forest Grove Drive near the school, a motorist pulled over and told Glenn and Kevin that a bear and two cubs had been spotted crossing the road behind us, where we had just been walking. We did not see the bears, however, and kept going.

Our distance was 6.8 km and time was 1h58.

On Saturday morning, it was very rainy indeed, but Larry, René, Kevin and Flora chose to brave the elements and walk on, and walked along Noel and Cameron to the overpass and trail to Government St., to Cariboo Road and into the trail at Burnaby Lake, to the Piper Spit. Not much activity there, even the ducks and birds were taking cover from the heavy rain! We walked back the same way, and our feet did get soaked, however our brollies were a help keeping us semi-dry. Flora, Larry, René and his wife Denise rewarded ourselves by going to IHOP for breakfast afterwards.

Walk distance was 8.5 km and time was 1h25. Later on I saw Susan just returning from a walk, and she says hi to all the Cruisers.

On Wednesday evening, Bobtoc, Larry, René, RA Edie, Alex, Brenda and Glenn walked along Beaverbrook and Eastlake to Underhill, where Brenda, Glenn, René and Larry continued up Underhill to Broadway, then returned and joined Alex, Edie and Bobtoc, and the group returned to Cameron Centre.  There was only light rain during the evening, thankfully.

Distance was 4.8 km, and 5.6 km for the foursome who extended their walk to Broadway.  Time for all was 1h10

From Jennel:  Jennel went on a run down the Crunch on Wednesday morning to Rocky Point….got back home, no rain, so I leashed up the dogs and brought them UP the other part of Crunch!  10.28 km…NO RAIN!  Yahoo!

On Monday night Kevin, Alex, Larry and René enjoyed what turned out to be great fall weather, as the early drizzle faded away and the foursome walked along Beaverbrook, the Gaglardi overpass, up the big hill on Forest Grove to Underhill and down Underhill and along Eastlake and back to Cameron Centre.

Time of 1h25 and distance of 6.7 km; 7.4 km for René and Larry as they did bobturns to link up with Alex and Kevin.

From Jennel: Jennel brought her 2 gals (canines Nellie &Winnie) out to do the Coquitlam Crunch Monday morning before the rain. … “Well, almost!”… Rain started on my 2nd lap…but better than the other day when I was caught in that HUGE monsoon of a storm!!! So this was nothing! (8 km)

On Saturday morning, RA Edie, Flora, René, Larry, Kevin, Len, Miriam and canine Jax walked along the Stoney Creek trail and saw a few salmon. The water level of the creek has returned to normal after last week’s monsoon rain. We walked up North Road to Chapman, where Len, Miriam and Jax turned back to return to Cameron Centre, and the rest of the group continued along Chapman, Robinson St., Miller Ave. to Miller Park, up the park stairs and out of the park and along a couple of other streets to Townley St., Grover Ave., stopped at Edie’s house, then along through Mountain View Park to Smith Ave., where Kevin bid adieu to the group, and the rest of the gang continued along Robinson, Cottonwood, North Road, David Drive, Willoughby and back to Cameron Centre.

Walk time was 2h, distance 8.75 km.

In the Cameron Centre parking lot we said hello to Debra Nicol, who had just finished teaching her spinning classes. Edie, Flora and Larry made their way to IHOP after for refreshments, and along the way said hello to Brenda and Glenn.

Thanks to all the attendees at our Cruiser dinner on Wednesday night at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course for making the event an enjoyable one. It was great to see everyone.

Edie has reported that members of the Stoney Creek Environmental Society have seen salmon spawning activity in Stoney Creek – perhaps we’ll be lucky and see more.

From Jennel: Jennel and Heather send our hello’s to all the Cruisers and hope everyone is in good health 🙂 Jennel went for a run Monday morning in the POURING RAIN!!! …and that’s an understatement! I was on a mission to get a present from the mall. Driving would be way too easy….so I decided to make a journey of it. Not too bad on my way down, but it was coming down in buckets on the way home. So to be safe…I made my way over to the Coquitlam Crunch (away from traffic) and headed home. 9 km run and an extra 20 lbs of wet clothing! 🙁 “This was NOT the best run of the year!!!” LOL

On Tuesday morning Heather & Jennel walked almost 10 km! Nothing exciting to write about other than it was DRY!!! These days that’s exciting enough! Heather and Jennel also have been doing some walks and run together on a regular basis.

In the men’s World Cup soccer qualifying round, Team Canada defeated Mexico 2-1 on Tuesday in an exciting game in Edmonton, improving Canada’s chances of qualifying.

In this season of almost-constant rain, amazingly again the Cruisers were very fortunate on Saturday morning as it did not rain during our walk – thank you weather! – trying to stay on the good side of the weather gods, ha ha. RA Edie, René, Alex, Kevin, Flora, Len, Miriam and canine Jax, Bobtoc and Larry walked along the trail to Government St., along Government and Cariboo Road and on to Joe’s trail, returning the same way. We hoped to see some salmon spawning but only saw one.

Distance for the walk was 8 km and time 2h04. René returned along North Road. Flora, Len, Miriam and Jax continued past Joe’s trail to Hume Park, their distance 9.46 km and time 2h11.

On Saturday morning, RA Edie, Flora, Alex, Kevin, Len (and Jax), René, Bobtoc and Larry met at Confederation Park and walked along Penzance Drive, then up the trail that leads into the Capitol Hill area, and exited on Hastings St. near Fell Ave., then took Fell to Frances St. and walked westward to Beta Ave., Albert St. and back to the park, distance of 6.5 km and time 1h40. Amazingly, it did not rain during our walk – the Cruisers won’t be denied! (?)

Afterwards, some of the group went for coffee at the Cafe Artigiano at Hastings St. and Rosser Ave.

Len has documented our adventure and has provided links for photos and maps – thanks Len.

On Wednesday evening, RA Edie, Brenda, Glenn, Alex, Kevin and Larry met at the Centre and walked along Cameron, Beaverbrook, Eastlake to Underhill and returned the same way. It was better weather-wise than Monday, some rain but not heavy, and we all had our brollies.

Distance about 5 km, time 1h15. Alex walked a bit farther as he walked from the Lougheed skytrain station to Cameron to meet us.

POSSIBLE REMEMBRANCE DAY WALK:  RA Edie has a plan: take the skytrain to Waterfront, walk 3.5 km via Coal Harbour to Beaver Lake and around the lake for 1.5 km and return through the park 3.5 km for a total of about 8.5 km and then skytrain home.  Those that wish can have lunch at a place to be determined.  We could meet at Production at 8:30 maybe.  Please let Edie know if you’re interested so we know who and how many will be going, and can co-ordinate our meeting time and place.

November 2

On Monday evening, the weather may not have been fit for man or beast, but some Cruisers wouldn’t be denied the “pleasure” of a walk.  Bobtoc, RA Edie and Larry braved the rain, which was not too bad at first, but then got steadier as we progressed through our walk, going along Beaverbrook, Eastlake to Underhill and returned the same way.  Our brollies helped to keep semi-dry.  Once we got out there and kept moving it wasn’t too bad – at least that’s what we kept telling each other.

Distance was about 5 km and time 1h15.
