July 31

On Monday evening Glenn & I met at the Cameron parking lot. We then witnessed the Freedom 55 Convoy arrive. This included Edie, Alex, Rene and Flora drive in at the exact same time.

The group didn’t have a route in mind, so we headed down the Stoney Creek trail. At North Road Edie & Flora decided to return to Cameron. The 4 guys decided to walk the Jim’s Jungle trail. When we arrived at the North Road trail we decided to go down it. Near the end of the trail a wasp stung me for some reason. It sure did hurt.

We headed back down Stoney Creek noting not many people were on the trail. We returned to the Cameron parking lot and after a bit of chatting we all headed home.

On Saturday morning Flora surprised me and was the first one there at Cameron with her friend from Kamloops, Elaine. As well Edie, Len, Miriam and Jax arrived soon after.

I came prepared with a plastic jar to pick blackberries on the walk. This motivated Flora and Len to find a container as well.

The group decided to walk Joe’s trail. So we headed down past Cameron school to the Lougheed underpass and then turned at Keswick Park to cross Government and walked the trail to the Hanam grocery store. Miriam was suprised to see a line up people waiting for the store to open. We cut through the parking lot and up the stairs and headed down North Road. This is typically prime blackberry picking but because of the construction the bushes have been cut back.

The group headed down Joe’s trail. It was fairly quiet and we only saw one person walking a white dog that was wanting to say HI to Jax. But typical Jax he seems to first walk by and then stop and play a bit and continue on. At the Cariboo underpass Edie & Miriam stopped to look at the graffiti. There was a very nice Joker that I thought took some talent.

We came to Cariboo and walked up to Winston. Edie had heard the trail to Eastlake park had reopened, which it was. Since it hasn’t had much walkers there were blackerries just waiting to be picked.

Eastlake Park has now been converted from a baseball diamond to a nice dog park. Which we saw 2 dogs with owners using. We walked over the bridge and checked Stoney Creek out. Headed up Cameron and back to the Cameron parking lot.

It was a nice morning to get out and walk. Some of us had more blackerries in their containers than others and Len had crushed his by accident. Good time had by all.

On Wednesday evening Kevin, Nikita, Shiraz, Glenn, Brenda, René and Larry walked from Cameron Centre along Stoney Creek trail, up North Road to Burnaby Mountain, then down Jim’s Jungle trail back to Stoney Creek trail and back to the Centre.  Distance 6 km and time 1h16.  The weather was sunny, a bit cooler than last week but was appreciated!

On Monday evening we were rained out!  Very heavy rain around the time of our walk.  Who would have thought we’d be rained out during the summer?

On Saturday morning Len, Miriam (with Jax), René, Liane, Edie and Larry walked along the Stoney Creek trail, up North Road to Burnaby Mountain, along the power line trail and up into the mountain trails almost to cardiac hill, then returned via the dead moped trail to North Road, Stoney Creek trail to Cameron Centre.  The slightly cooler temperature was appreciated although it seemed kind of humid.  Our distance was 9.3 km and our time was 2h13.

Correction on Wednesday night’s hike distance and time: 8.18 km and 2h36.

Thanks Glenn for the stats.

On Wednesday evening Brenda, Glenn, Liane, Nikita, and Edie joined the BMN Bert Flinn Hike.  We met at Old Orchard parking lot at 6 pm.   The hike started with a hot, steep climb on Jacob Street and then the first trail before reaching the other undulating trails.  As the sun lowered, the beautiful sun glow came through the trees.  Some lovely views of the water before we came to the steep hills – this time going downhill but much cooler.

Time out was 3 hours and distance was about 7.5 km.  Lots of fun!

Thanks to Edie for the report!

On Monday night nine Cruisers, Nikita, Brenda, Glenn, Rene, Alex, Liane, Shiraz, Rayan and Edie walked Stoney Creek trail  to the Jungle Jim’s trail, then to North Road and back.  Our time was 1h13 and our distance was 5.41 km.  (The Cruiser rule of using the shortest time and longest distance was in effect).  We missed our leader but enjoyed the walk despite the warm weather. 😎

Thank you Edie for the report, and to Alex for the distance and time summary!

July 16

Liane, Flora, Edie, Laura, Eoin and Lucky met at Lyons Park on Saturday. We made our way to Shaughessy and McAllister to connect to the Donald Street path, a lovely canopied walk. The path didn’t go very far so we walked through neighbourhoods to Pitt River Road, turned left on Pitt River and walked through various neighbourhoods to Thompson Park, then followed a pretty trail until we came to a residential area.

Once again we walked through neighbourhoods until we found Pitt River Road. We were very close to the Mary Hill Bypass and from there stayed on Pitt River Road until we came to Reeve Street, where we entered Gates Park. At the concession, we got freezies (my first one) and coffee for Laura and Eoin. They stayed in the park to enjoy their coffee while Liane, Flora and I returned to Lyons Park. We walked almost 11k while discovering new areas in PoCo.

Thanks to Edie for the above report!

On Wednesday evening Alex, Larry, Edie, Kevin, Liane, Brenda and Glenn walked from Cameron Centre along Stoney Creek trail, up North Road, Chapman, Robinson to Ebert, and back to the Centre. Speedster walkers Liane and Brenda took Foster instead of Ebert but we all finished at the same place. Alex jogged most of the way and bobturned to keep with the group.

Distance for the walkers was just about 7 km and our time was 1h34. Alex’s distance was 7.5 km.

On Thursday afternoon, Edie graciously hosted some Cruisers for coffee at her house. Bobtoc, Marie, Eoin, Laura, Miriam, Len, Alex, Angela, Glenn, Brenda, Kevin and Larry attended. A tent was set up in the front yard which provided shade for us. Thank you Edie for the pleasant gathering!

On Saturday morning René, Kevin, Liane, Nikita, Shiraz and Larry met at Cameron Centre and walked down Bartlett Court, Lougheed Highway underpass, Manchester Dr. and trail to North Road, down North Road and along Joe’s trail, crossed Cariboo Road and into the Burnaby Lake trails to Piper Spit, saw the ducks at the pier, then continued up Piper to Hunter St., Lakeland, Dalebright to Brighton Ave., then up Brighton, Production Way, Eastlake, Beaverbrook and back to the Centre.  It was a great day to be out and in the shade of the trails.  The air quality was better than it had been the previous couple of days.  On our way back on Eastlake we saw Ivan driving by and waved hello to each other.

Our distance was 12 km (good workout everyone!) and our time was about 2h40, with René, Shiraz and Liane leading the way, finishing about 10 minutes earlier.

Monday morning saw the Cruisers go to Rocky Point park. We were there early before it got really busy as Golden Spike Days were on for the weekend. Kevin, Brenda, Glenn, Nikita, René, Edie, Maureen (with Chester), Larry, and Flora who was doing largely the same course as the group but just behind us, walked along the shoreline trail and were able to cross the wooden boardwalk that had been closed since last winter. We continued to Alderside, then, about halfway along Alderside, we saw a black bear nosing around the driveways of some houses further ahead, which led to a rather close encounter with a resident who was getting into a RV camper! No confrontation or injuries to anyone including the bear.

Our group turned around at that point and headed back the way we came, and had ice cream and coffee before leaving the very busy park. Our distance was 7.5 km and our time was 1h35.

From Jennel: Also on Monday morning, Jennel ran down Heritage Mountain to Rocky Point, then went back up. A big hill, down then up! Her distance was 9.07 km. No bear sighting that morning but there have been bear sightings in her neighbourhood.

July 1 – Happy Canada Day!

On Saturday morning Kevin, Edie, Alex, Larry, Barry (and Bebe) and Len and Miriam (and Jax) took the skytrain to Waterfront Centre and walked along the Coal Harbour waterfront past the Westin Bayshore hotel and into the Stanley Park seawall, to Lumberman’s Arch and into the park trails along Beaver Lake trail and Lover’s Walk trail (where we noted the hemlock trees were being ravaged by the hemlock looper caterpillar/moth, unfortunately leading to the probable death of many of those trees) to Ferguson Point, then back onto the seawall to Second Beach and around the southern end of Lost Lagoon, then back along Coal Harbour walkway to West Cordova St. and Waterfront food fair.

The park scenery and weather were spectacular. We had lunch in an area outside the food fair and some of us tried the food trucks that were lined up along West Cordova as part of the Canada Day celebration.

Distance for the Coal Harbour and park walk was 12.3 km, add the walk to and from the Lougheed skytrain station and it was just over 13 km. Walk time was 4h12. Thanks to Alex for planning our route and to Len and Miriam for the photos.
