On Monday morning Edie, Kevin, Nikita, Brenda, Glenn, Flora, Len, Miriam with Jax, Laura, Eoin, Larry, René, Denise and her niece Alison (hope I got her name right!) met at Rocky Point on a sunny with cloudy periods Victoria Day.. Most of the group walked along the paved and lower trails by the inlet to Old Orchard Beach and returned the same way, group distance 6.23 km and time 1h57 (thanks Len for the stats!).
Larry, Eoin and Laura walked about 6 km with a similar time. Flora jogged to Old Orchard Beach and returned, her time 1h01 and distance 6.39 km according to her stats. René and Alison ran along the trails, then on Alderside to Ioco Road and returned, their distance very close to 10 km and their time somewhere around 1h30.
After the walks and runs, the group, together with Alex and Angela, surprised Larry with a birthday celebration (the big 6-0!) which was a surprise, really! Thanks to all who attended and made the day special for me! Special thanks to Edie and her first assistant Flora for organizing. Those Rocky Point ice cream cakes were so delicious! Later in the afternoon I met briefly with Liane who says hi to all the Cruisers. Very nice of Edie to provide some Rocky Point ice cream for Liane.

On Saturday morning Edie, Kevin, Nikita, Flora, Len with Jax, and Larry met at the Christine Sinclair Centre and walked around Deer Lake and the Shadbolt Centre, then enjoyed coffee at Bastions inside the Centre. It was a grey cloudy morning and it did rain as we ended our walk and returned along the Highway 1 overpass on Kensington, but we were fortunate it didn’t rain for the entire walk.
We met Carla, Joe, and Rainy at the Centre where they meet with their group to do a 5 km run-walk – it’s been a while since I’ve seen them. (They were part of the originating group with Bobtoc for the start of the Forest Grove Running group, the predecessor running group to the Cruisers, over 35 years ago!)

On Saturday morning Len, Miriam with Jax, Sherian, and Larry met at Squint Lake Park and walked along Greystone almost to Broadway, then reversed direction and walked through the trails to Greystone at Phillips, and continued along Greystone, crossed Duthie, and along the urban trail to Sherlock, at which point we turned back and made our way back to Squint Lake.
Our distance was about 7 km and our time was about 1h30. Afterwards Sherian continued on by jogging up the Shellmont hill, her impression was it was as steep as ever (yes!) then came back down and took the trails back to Squint Lake Park, which was by that time crowded with the baseball leagues preparing for their games. She saw Eoin, Laura and Lucky, who were walking in the trails near Greystone too. Beautiful weather we enjoyed (but perhaps a bit early for this sunny, dry weather, we shall see!).
Also on Saturday morning, Jennel and Heather ran the Run for Women out at UBC. They did the 10 km run, which for them was actually 11 km as the route was apparently not marked all that well, so they did a bonus 1 km! Their times were both 1h29:24, and their 10 km time Jennel reported was 1h20.
Congratulations Jennel and Heather! You got great weather for it.

On Saturday morning Larry and Flora met at Cameron Centre but no other Cruisers showed up, so we headed over to Christine Sinclair Centre to walk with some folks who were doing an informal walk/run around the Burnaby Lake trails. We met Rachel there, so our group of three walked on the Burnaby Lake trails in and around the area behind the Copeland ice rink. Flora ran and did some interval training. Larry and Rachel walked 5 km, and Flora did about 6 km with bobturns, and our time was 50 minutes. It was cloudy but it did not rain. Afterwards Flora and Larry had coffee at Bastion’s.
Also on Saturday morning, Sherian did a solo run at Rocky Point, did our usual route, and noted the reconstruction of the crossings and all the new houses on Alderside since she had last been there about four years ago. She enjoyed the run and looks forward to being with the Cruisers again sometime.

On Wednesday evening it was another great, clear evening as Kevin, René, Edie, Glenn, Brenda, Larry, Flora, her friend Amin, and Eoin and Laura with Lucky, walked along the Stoney Creek trail to North Road and back the same way. René and Brenda continued up North Road to Chapman before returning, and caught up to the group again on the trail so we all finished around the same time of 1 hour.
The group’s distance was 4 km, and was 5 km for René and Brenda. After the walk Eoin presented Larry with a painting he did of Mount Baker, for inspiration, for which I am honoured and humbled to receive! Thank you very much Eoin.
My apologies to Nikita for mistakenly leaving her off the list of walkers on Monday evening!
