Bob and Larry at the start

On to the exciting news from Maui
Sunday: We ran the 15 K yesterday and it was a great run – weather superb, the course very scenic, along the highway but mostly right along the beaches, good number of water
stations, the after-race food was great, the awards celebration as chaotic as usual. But this is a fairly low-key event so we admire all the volunteers for their efforts. Bob, Larry and Flora ended
the race by taking a short swim in the ocean as this is now a tradition. Actually, during our TP Boot Camp we have been doing the ocean swim after our runs as well.

Tracy’s boot camp had the best effect on Bob! His 15 K running time was 1:45 and he finished first in the 70 and over age group! Larry finished at 1:27, 6th overall and 2nd place in the 40-49 male age group. Flora finished at estimated time of 2:15 which was good considering she has not trained for distance running, and she ran stronger as the run progressed. At this time the results are not posted on the Maui Oceanfront Marathon website; maybe later this week they will be up. Tracy, Ross, and Marie joined the runners for an apres-run lunch in Lahaina. All in all, everyone had a great time.

When we had lunch in Ka’anipali one day, the restaurant had listed as premium beer – you probably can guess what – yes, Bud was listed as a premium beer! We got quite a laugh out of that. from Maui –

Monday: Sayeeda, Chris and Lora met at Cameron and ran to IGA on a great night for running. The temperature was mild and it was raining lightly. Edie and Adele were going to walk with Bella and April but Bella fell out of the car and was limping so we didn’t go. It turned out that her owner put on her harness on in such a way that she couldn’t move her leg. Once we got home and I took her harness off, she was fine. She needs a smarter person.
Wednesday: Four runners met on Wedesday: Alex, Libby and Edie welcomed Shiraz back after a looooooooong absence. Since it was hill night, the four incorporated 5 hills in their run. We ran Forest Grove backwards to Shellmont, down Shellmont, through the Meadowlands area (looked at the Clubhouse that we need Bob to buy for us), along Broadway, up Underhill and back through Forest Grove. Distance was 9.2 and time out was 1:19. The weather was clear and mild and everyone enjoyed the run. Shiraz might be a bit stiff today, but had a great run.

Three Cruisers met at the Centre Saturday. Larry, Tish, Bobtoc met at 8:00 am, decided to go to the IGA corner and back. The trio enjoyed a mild temperature, a light shower precip, covered 9.5 km in 1:07. The two males showed off their Maui tans, fearful the precip may dilute the tinted skin. Edie was away due to a cold; no other reports from those AWOL, although we know Rod is in Costa Rica.
The Maui foursome: Aloha!
Tracy, Larry and Bob, accompanied by Bob’s bride Marie, spent two wonderful weeks in Kihei, Maui, for the TP Boot Camp. The running trio embarked early on a number of training runs in training for the 15 k, soon to be joined by Flora who spent a week in Maui with her husband Ross. The trio, then the four, ran a minimum of one hour up to maximums of 1.53 to 2.08, and were moulded into credible condition under the top kick’s tutoring. Tracy’s supervision allowed the trio to complete the 15 km run Sunday Jan 24. Much of the training was done on Kihei’s beaches on soft sand and the sidewalks at beachside constructed by the hotels on the Wailea waterfront. Tracy ran the ass off Bobtoc, the result being an improvement of 6 min, 52 seconds compared to his 2009 result. My thanks to Tracy! The three runners and the top kick cooled their heels in the Pacific after the run.
The awards ceremony was, as Larry reported via Edie earlier, somewhat chaotic.
Official times for the Jan 24 15 k:
Larry 1:27:05, sixth in his age group, in the first third finishers.
Bob 1:46:21, first in his age group. Of one.
Flora 2:06:55 a good result taking into account the amount of her recent training.
Tracy, not content with her top kick running duties most ably carried out, cycled over 200 miles and walked several miles over the two weeks.
The four athletes and the two athletic supporters enjoyed the Maui weather, the run, and the camaradarie to the hilt.
