The rewards of running are coffee and freshly baked cinnamon buns or Kona Lava Java ice cream in Paradise
Monday:The walkers – Lynn and Al walked through Joe’s Trail, up North Road through to Cameron Centre, estimated time just under 1 hour because they were finished by the time the runners returned from their route.
The runners – Shiraz, Carla and Larry, ran along Joe’s Trail and back to Cameron, time out 1 hour, 7.5 km.
The weather – sunny with a hint of coolness and sundown in full swing as we returned. Perfect weather for walking and running, a candidate for the best night of the year, and good company. Others were absent with leave, no doubt trying to make the most of the remains of the summer. Doesn’t get any better…you know the rest.

Wednesday: Three only runners turned out Wednesday, a number being absent on vacation or were cycling. Alex Lau, Tish Oliver and Bobtoc departed from Cameron Centre at 6:45 for a run full of hills. The trio ran along Beaverbrook, ascended the Gaglardi pedestrian overpass, continued on Forest Grove Drive around the horn, ground up the hill to Underhill Avenue. Cyclists Adele and Tracy passed us as they were cycling down the hill going east, said hi to me. I assumed they were employees of the local funeral directors, measuring my body, but no, they were two of our own. The trio continued to the Shellmont hill, turned down to the Forest Hills subdivision, looked at prospective club houses, ran to Arden-Greystone, ran to the IGA corner, turned back, ascended the Shellmont hill, then returned to the Centre via Underhill, Eastlake, Beaverbrook. Time out, 1:19, distance approx. 11.7 km. The trio enjoyed perfect weather; some cloud, ideal temperature, moderate humidity, lots of laughs, but worked fairly hard. The daylight times are noticeably shorter now. Time to find your reflective gear. It was great to see Tish.
Saturday:
Nine Cruisers or friends of the Cruisers walked or ran Saturday am, three from Cameron Centre, the remainder on the Fort to Fort trail in Fort Langley. Rod, Larry and Ken Blowey ran from the Centre at 7:30 am to the Kensington Sports Arena and return, distance 16 km in 2.01 time, setting a good pace. Walkers Al and Lynn, runners Rick Davidson, Sgt. Major Christina, RA Edie and Bobtoc met at Wendell’s on Glover Street in Fort Langley and tackled the Fort to Fort trail just before 8:00 am, Al and Lynn setting off first followed by the runners. Al and Lynn turned right off Billy Brown Street in the stunning Bedford Landing new subdivision of houses and apartments, walked 7 km and returned to rack up 14 km in a blistering 2.06. Christina, Edie and Bob approached the Fort to Fort by turning left off Billy Brown and did the usual distance of 16k, turned back to the parking lot where the caretakers’ house and rustic biffy are located, then tackled the Houston trail, which comprises many steep, windy undulating hills. Bob in vain looked for the timberline and snowline (just kidding), then returned to the Fort to Fort to arrive back at Wendell’s. On the way back a few blackberries were picked by Christina and Bob, and each of the trio was presented with a fresh plum picked by a passerby. Rick Davidson left the trio early on and big time ran to the new Golden Ears bridge and return to complete nearly 29 km in 2:50, well on his way in his training for the Victoria marathon. All Langley participants enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the trail and the perfect weather for the running or walking. Lynn commented on good condition of the wide gravel trail and hopes we can use the Fort to Fort again soon. That, we shall do. Bob, Christina and Edie rewarded themselves with fresh baked cinnamon buns and fancy coffees and sat outside to enjoy them before returning home.
