As the provincial health guidelines now allow outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people, and interest expressed in re-starting our outings, the Cruisers are returning to a more normal existence. We will be mindful of distancing and can break into smaller groups based on people’s walk/run pace.

We respect everyone’s different comfort levels with group activities during this time, so please use your discretion and keep in touch with us.

As the current situation of escalating Covid cases presents renewed challenges, there is a possibility that more restrictive guidelines could be issued at any time.  We will comply with any new guidelines.

Monday morning saw Kevin, Susan, Larry, Alex, Flora, Laura, Eoin and canine Lucky meet at Rocky Point and walk along the earth trail (which is one-way now).  Laura, Eoina, Lucky and Larry walked to the end of the trail to Alderside and returned using the paved path to the parking lot, distance about 4.5 km.  Larry then walked along the paved path to meet the rest of the group, and met them just by Murray St. near Klahanie,  Alex and Flora jogged almost to April Road and back.  Upon our return, some of the group had some ice cream.

Larry’s distance was about 7 km;  Alex, Flora, Susan and Kevin’s distance was approximately 10 km and time for the group was about 2h30.

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!  2nd doses now underway.

On Saturday morning, Larry, Susan, Flora, Rod, Alex and René met at Cameron and jogged/walked the Stoney Creek trail and around streets in Coquitlam.  Larry and René jogged along the trail and up North Road to Chapman, where René departed and jogged home, while the group continued its way along Chapman to Robinson, and returned on Cottonwood, crossed North Road and proceeded along Willoughby and Cameron back to the Centre.  Distance about 7 km, time 84 minutes.

From Jennel: Jennel and Heather are signing up for the Best Friends Virtual 15 K and the plan is to run it in early June.

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!

May 27

Wednesday evening was great for walking and jogging, no precip and trails were not crowded, as Alex, Larry, René and Kevin walked and jogged from Cameron Centre along the Stoney Creek trail, with Larry and René jogging the route and up to North Road at Chapman using the mountain trail, then returning down North Road to meet Alex and Kevin.  Alex jogged up North Road to Chapman and returned along Stoney Creek trail to rejoin the others.  Larry and René jogged to the Centre then jogged back to the trail to meet Kevin and Alex.   Larry and René’s distance 5.5 km, time 48 minutes.  Kevin and Alex’s distance 4.8 km, time 55 minutes.

From Jennel:  Reporting that Jennel went for a HILL workout on Wednesday.  Not meaning to.  Ran down Noons Creek to Runnel Drive (Tim Hortons area) and thought I could loop back up hiking the Crunch…..WRONG!?!  They were doing renovations, so it was closed.  No problem, but this meant “my options were”  Noons Creek (hill #1) to run back up or Lansdowne (hill #2)!?!  Which was the lesser of the evils!?!  I opted for Lansdowne.  Right now, I’m thinking that was NOT a wise choice.  That was a VERY Steep Hill  🙁   had Libby’s little voice in my head saying “lift those knees!” ……12.66 km.

That’s a tough course Jennel !

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!!!

May 24 – Happy Victoria Day!

On Monday morning (stat holiday!), Larry, Len, Alex and Kevin braved the drizzle and jogged/walked Joe’s trail to North Road and returned.  It was a great day to walk and jog, and not that many other people were out.  Edie stopped by at Cameron to say hello before we started out.

Many Cruisers continue to walk on their own or in small groups.  The Cruisers “retired” group is quite active.

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace and we can get back to a more normal existence sometime this summer!

May 23

On Saturday morning, it was a reunion of sorts as some Cruisers that we haven’t seen for awhile attended – Len and canine Jax, Eoin, Laura and their canine Lucky, and Susan joined Larry, Flora, Alex and René as we met at the Squint Lake parking lot on a gorgeous sunny spring day, and made our way up Burnwood, crossed Burnaby Mountain Parkway and proceeded along a trail that runs along the base of Burnaby Mountain.

Eoin, Laura and Lucky returned back the way we came up, while Larry and René jogged up a winding trail to Centennial Park where the Horizons restaurant used to be, then jogged around the trails surrounding that site, and then proceeded down to the 500 steps where they met Len, Jax, Susan, Flora and Alex.

The group descended the 500 steps to the parking lot across Barnet highway from Barnet Marine Park Beach, and walked down to the beach and around the trails in the park, where the parking lots and the overflow parking lot were already full just before 10 a.m.!  While there, Len and Flora took a dip in the water of the inlet – according to Len it was noticeably warmer than it was for the Polar Bear swim and previous monthly immersions – see enclosed photo.

From the trails at the beach, the group proceeded back up the trails of the mountain to the velodrome, then crossed over to Drummond’s Walk, taking that trail to the Hastings St. overpass, and continued along the urban walkway from Cliff Ave. to Curtis and further along to Duthie Ave. and Greystone walkway back to Squint Lake park.

It was quite a trek – 15.5 km of undulating trails, total time 4h12, 3h20 moving time, and 395 meter elevation gain – thanks to Len for the stats!

So many photos, I’ve included two (thanks Len and Susan!), but many more at Len’s link at

From Jennel: Jennel and both dogs were planning on running the Coquitlam Crunch….way too busy.  So, Ran down Parkway Blvd to Johnson, then down David and up a few stairs back to the IGA complex, cut across parking lot to Parkway Blvd. and UP to David, to Sandstone…stopped at home for dogs to get a sip of water, then back out down Panorama to Forest Parkway and down to David now towards Bert Flinn Park.

Beautiful, but it just got a little too secluded for me, so I followed my gut and turned around and went back home all the way back UP that HILL!!!!!  Wowsers!  Thats a big hill!  11.50 km  🙂

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!

On Wednesday evening, Larry, Alex, Edie and her nephew Nathan walked along the Stoney Creek trail to North Road and went up North Road to Chapman, then returned, distance 5.5 km and time 59 minutes.  A glorious evening to be outside!
On Thursday further Cruiser walks ensued with Kevin, Alex, Edie, Nathan, and Larry taking advantage of the beautiful weather.  Kevin, Alex, Edie and Nathan walked around the Burnaby Lake trails, with Kevin and Alex doing the complete way around the lake.

Below are pictures of the scenery and of the two athletes in action (?!).

Also seen walking on the Burnaby Mountain trails today were Eoin, Laura and their now fully grown pup Lucky.  Nice to see them!

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!!!

Cruiser Retirement Surprise Gathering at Bby Mountain

May 17

On Saturday morning, Edie, Larry, Flora, Alex, and Ivan and his canine companion Lulu met at Cameron Centre and walked along the Burnaby Lake trail to the nature house and Piper spit, and returned the same way.  Ivan and Lulu walked along with us until the entrance to the Lake trails just past the dam and Cariboo Road, then he returned back to the Centre.  On the way back, Flora and Larry did some jogging.  Distance was 7.2 km, time 1h40.  A gorgeous summer day!

Jennel’s report on the Coquitlam Cruisers:  Heather was cross-training (working her lats) and building a fence for their house this week.  Therefore, Jennel was solo (with the dogs) and did the Crunch Mon. 7 km, Tues. 8 km, Wed. 8.30 km, Thurs. 10 km 🙂

Many Cruisers continue to walk on their own or in small groups, some getting out every day.
Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!
Stay safe everybody.

May 14

On Wednesday evening, Rod, Larry, Edie and Kevin walked along the Stoney Creek trail to North Road and returned, distance 5 km and time pretty close to 1 hour.  The spring weather makes it so nice to be outside, and it’s getting better.

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!!!

Be careful out there.

May 10

Edie, Larry, Alex and Flora met at the Squint Lake parking lot on Saturday morning and walked along Halifax, the trail just beside Halifax Park up to Lochdale St., along Lochdale to Fell Ave., then along Winch St., up Holdom Ave. to Grant St., down to Howard Ave. and up Heathdale Court to Bobtoc and Marie’s to say hi to Bobtoc, whose leg is healing and he is walking better but still unable to join the Cruisers.  We just had a drizzle of precipitation on the way back and that was it, so it was a good day to be outside.  Time of walk 1h52, which included visiting time, and distance was 7.2 km.

From Jennel:  Jennel and Heather’s runs for the past week: (they do their walks separately but they run together)

  • Sunday…6 km walk,
  • Monday…16 km run,
  • Tuesday…rest,
  • Wednesday…16.59  km run,
  • Thursday…10 km walk,
  • Friday…6.19  km walk,
  • Saturday…rest (if that ever happens!?!?) lol

The runs include a 2 km run with Jennel’s dogs, then she drops them off at home and runs to meet Heather.

That’s a great schedule!  Inspiring.

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!
Stay safe everybody

May 6

On Wednesday evening, it was mild and pleasant out as René, Larry, Alex, Edie and Rod used the route of Beaverbrook, Eastlake to Underhill.  René and Larry continued running along the paved trail alongside Broadway to Arden and partway up Arden, then returned along the same way to Underhill, where they met up with Alex, Edie and Rod, who walked along Eastlake to Underhill and Broadway.  The group returned to Cameron Centre by taking the gravel trail north of the Mammoth Studios, which led to Production Way, then along Eastlake and Beaverbrook, with Larry and René running.  Larry and René’s distance was 7 km and time 56 minutes, while Rod, Edie and Alex’s distance was 5.5 km and time 1h18.   The walkway alongside Broadway now has LED lights along the path, and lights along the street as well.

Susan says hello to all the Cruisers, and sent some great pics of her walks.  Below are two of the photos, highlighting the beauty of our outdoor trails.  Thanks for the pics Susan!

Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!!!

Be careful out there.

Edie, René, Larry and Alex met at the Squint Lake parking lot on Saturday morning and walked/jogged mostly in two groups.   Edie and Alex walked along Greystone to Duthie, crossed Duthie Ave., along the paved path to Cliff Ave. and Hastings St., across the overpass over Hastings, down Cliff Ave., through a laneway and along a paved path alongside Barnet Hwy. for a bit, then returned along Greystone, their time 1h30 and distance 6.8 km.  Larry and René jogged the same route most of the way, diverting to a gravel trail parallel to Barnet Hwy and between Barnet and the inlet towards the cement plant, then returning along Dalla Tina Road and through a trail across lower Burnaby Mountain, across Bby Mountain Parkway, and down Burnwood to Squint Lake, their time 1h20 and distance 10 km.  The weather was unexpectedly pleasant, defying the forecast of rain, which seems to happen quite often with Cruiser outings.
Let’s hope the vaccinations continue at a rapid pace!

Let me know if you have an adventure to share.   Above all, stay safe.
