On Monday morning, Larry, Alex and Kevin met at Cameron Centre and walked to the Burnaby Lake trails and on to Piper Spit, and enjoyed the cooler weather. We looked for apples in the trees near the Cariboo RV Park but they were picked clean. Looks like no more apples or blackberries from that area (sob!). Distance was about 12 km and time 2h15, a couple of kms more for Larry who ran most of the route and did bobturns.

Saturday morning was a beautiful sunny morning and not too hot, as René, Larry, Rod, Kevin, Flora and Alex set out from Cameron Centre and walked/ran along Beaverbrook Cres. to the Gaglardi overpass, up the Forest Grove hill to a trail that went behind the Forest Grove school and along to the intersection of Shellmont and Underhill, then down the Shellmont trail and into the trails that run parallel to the golf course, and on to Squint Lake Park. René and Larry ran the route, and bob-turned to reunite with the group before continuing their run along Arden, Broadway, the gravel trail behind the Mammoth Studios building, down a trail, crossed Forest Grove and over the Gaglardi overpass through Stoney Creek school, where they said hello to Ivan and Lulu, then back onto Beaverbrook and Cameron, where they exchanged waves with Brenda and Glenn who were out walking.
René and Larry’s distance 12.2 km and time 1h40. Kevin, Rod and Alex walked back along the same route, their distance 9.7 km and time 1h55.
Flora did the same route along the gravel trail, then went down Production Way and along Eastlake to the Centre, her distance also 9.7 km and time 1h35.

On Wednesday evening, the Cockney Kings fish n’ chip dinner gathering at Kensington Park was enjoyed by the Cruisers, and the late summer weather co-operated as the rain held off until Thursday. RA Edie, Bobtoc, Kevin, Larry, Rod and Pat, Flora, Brenda, Glenn, Alex and Angela attended the dinner bash. We didn’t walk or run though – back to it on Saturday!
Thanks to all who attended, and to Rod and Edie for the idea.
Take care everyone, as unfortunately the Delta variant is ramping up.

On Saturday morning, René, Larry, RA Edie, Flora, Alex and Kevin met at Cameron Centre and walked/ran Joe’s trail to North Road and back. Edie and Flora walked the route and on the way back took a detour through the Cariboo RV park, which was full. Their distance was 7.5 km and time was 1h30.
Larry and René ran most of the route and their distance was 10.5 km and time 1h15. They also bobturned to walk with Edie and Flora briefly. Alex and Kevin walked and stopped along their way to pick blackberries and apples, their distance 7.5 km and time 1h50.
The blackberries are almost at the end of their season, so now’s the time to get the last of ’em while they’re around!

Monday morning’s welcome drizzly weather saw Bobtoc, Edie, Larry, Susan, Eoin, Laura and canine Lucky, Alex and Flora meet at Confederation Park and walk past the track and down to Penzance Drive and the trails that are southeast of the park, some of which were hilly, and where we were protected for awhile from the precipitation that all were happy to see. Alex and Flora did some blackberry and apple picking. The gang then walked across the park and on to Albert St. to Rosser Ave. and on to Hastings St. and stopped at Cafe Artigiano for coffee.
Distance about 2.5 km and walking time about 1 hour.

On Saturday morning, the air quality wasn’t the best due to the wildfire smoke, but the group stuck to trails within forested trail areas where the air quality was a bit better. Flora, Larry, RA Edie, Kevin, Alex and Susan met at Cameron Centre and walked down Bartlett Court through the Lougheed Highway underpass, past Keswick Park, along the pathways near Manchester Court and parallel to North Road, exiting the pathway near the Korean shopping centre on the west side of North Road, and down North Road to Joe’s trail, where considerable blackberry picking ensued, using discretion to select the berries that had been subjected to more sunlight, which were sweeter than the others (evidently considerable blackberry expertise in the group!).
Then, further along by the Cariboo RV Park, a couple of apple trees were found, where taste sampling and selection was made. With the fruit shopping mostly completed, the group continued on to Cariboo Road, Government St., the trail up to Eastlake, the overpass to Cameron St. and back to Cameron Centre, with some further stops to sample the blackberries along the way. Edie and Flora cut away the ivy that was starting to form around the “monkey” tree on Government St. Walk distance about 6 km, time 2h10 and a good harvest of the local freestanding fruit!

On Wednesday evening, I was unable to attend, however I heard that Flora, Alex, Rod, Kevin, Brenda and Glenn, there may have been others as well, attended at Cameron Centre and walked the Stoney Creek trail and North Road, distance 4 km to 5 km, temperature on the warm side.
Thanks Flora for the brief update!

On Monday morning, it was mostly cloudy and cool, enjoyed by Kevin, Larry, Susan and Alex as they met at the Squint Lake parking lot and walked along Halifax St. and Howard Ave. to Bobtoc’s to pick him up, and the group walked with the Bobster two laps around the neighbourhood of Heathdale Court, Howard, Grant St., along Holdom Ave. northbound to Parker St., then down to Meadedale and around again, distance with Bobtoc 2 km and time of 53 minutes.
Then the group, sans Bobtoc, walked up Holdom Ave. to Frances St, filling multiple containers with blackberries from the bushes that are ripening fast, and the berries are nice and sweet too. We then proceeded through Burnaby North secondary school and observed the construction of the new buildings – foundations now poured and significant structural beams and concrete walls installed, then trekked along Union St. to the urban trail, crossed Curtis St. at Sherlock Ave., then more urban trail until Duthie Ave., along Greystone and back to the Squint Lake parking lot.
Distance for the group, just over 12 km and time 3h30 due to the stoppages for blackberry picking. Larry’s distance was a bit longer (about 15 km) as he jogged along some of the way and then bobturned to rejoin the group.

On a rainy Saturday morning (yay because we need the rain so much!) Rod, RA Edie, Flora, Larry, Kevin, and Len and canine Jax met at Cameron Centre and walked down Cameron St. to the trail between Eastlake and Government, then along the familiar route along Government and on to Joe’s trail, did not see that many other walkers, runners or cyclists, and walked to the gate at North Road and returned the same way, distance about 7.5 km and time about 1h40.
Susan was so excited about the rain, she beat the group out and went for a walk earlier in the morning.
From Jennel: Our BESTIES Run Medals have finally arrived (perfect coffee mugs! – see below photo). Heather & I did our Best Friends run a while back…we made it a 15 km. Now we reward ourselves with the medals 🙂 Also, we ran 11 km together on Friday. From Heather’s home @ Karley Cres/David, to the Running Room and down to the Train Tracks to the path and back….cutting through Town Centre Park, then we split ways and ran to our homes. Both 11km 🙂 Excellent work!!!!
*Our next Virtual run is the Wine run…those medals are cool! You’ll have to wait until September to see those! Also planning on doing the Run for the Cure in October! Jennel & Heather 🙂

Report from Alex: Alex was the only Cruiser that showed up at 8:05 am at Cameron Centre on Saturday. Started his run at 8:13 am towards the Stoney Creek trail. Met Glenn at the entrance. He was already finished his morning walk.
Alex ran across the Gaglardi Way overpass and continued along Forest Grove Dr. to Underhill, Shellmont, Arden then along the trail next to the golf course to Squint Lake parking lot. From Squint Lake Park continued on to Duthie and Greystone. (The apple tree there is ready for harvest. Lots of apples are already on the ground and there are more still on the tree.) Continued westward on the Burnaby Mountain Urban Trail to Cliff Avenue at Hastings St.
My initial plan was to run to Burnaby North School and return. Then I had a change of mind and started to turn East and ended up running along Inlet Drive then along Barnet Highway to ……Barnet Marine Park. (Weather was not hot at the beach and there was light rain for about 5 minutes.)
Going back to the Barnet Highway and after about 2.2 km of running, I found the entrance to the Trans Canada Trail connecting Burnaby Mountain and Rocky Point Park. That section of the TCT, maintained by BC Hydro and Pacific Coast Terminals, ended on Douglas St at Clarke St. in Port Moody, and is about 3.5 km. Rocky Point Park is another 1.5 km from the intersection of Douglas and Clarke.
Total time out 3 hours 30 minutes. Distance 21 km. (Wow!)
Returned to Cameron Centre by Skytrain to pick up my van after enjoying an ice cream at Rocky Point Park.
My first half marathon jog since the Scotia Half in June of 2020.
Thanks for the report, Alex, and congratulations on your half marathon run!!
