On Monday evening, Edie, Kevin, Debbie, Flora and Larry met at Cameron Centre and did the Forest Grove route, going along Beaverbrook, crossing the Gaglardi overpass, up the Forest Grove hill, down Underhill and along Eastlake and you know the rest of the way back to the Centre. Edie, Debbie and Kevin walked, their distance 7.2 km and time 93 minutes. Flora and Larry jogged intervals and bobturned to stay with the walking group, keeping a steady pace, their distance 8.8 km and their time also 93 minutes. We beat the snow, no precipitation during our walk/run, and the temperature was about 0 C – winter is back for a while!
From Jennel: Jennel and her dogs did the Crunch on Sunday afternoon, just the bottom half of the crunch, 5 km. It was an adventure for Jennel on Monday – she took a tumble running on her way to meet Heather! While running down David, just before Pinetree she was trying to avoid the glare from the sun and fell over an uneven crack and ridge in a sidewalk. No damage other than a scrape on one of her forearms – no head contact, broken teeth, broken phone or watch. She was helped up by a nice older man at a bus stop.
She was awarded the Fallers Trophy virtually and will have to claim the Trophy sometime. Despite her fall, she carried on and met Heather for a 10.36 km jog and had some chocolates with Heather to help her recover. And some merlot after that! Glad you are okay Jennel!

On Saturday morning Liane, Edie, René and Larry met at the Christine Sinclair Centre parking lot and walked south along Kensington Ave., across the highway overpass to Deer Lake and walked mostly along the shoreline trail all the way around and back to the area behind the Burnaby Heritage Village, then went past Burnaby Central Secondary School along Deer Lake Parkway to Norland Ave. and cut through the parking lot at the Scotia Barn/Burnaby 8 Rinks, the soccer fields along Kensington Ave. and back to the Sinclair parking lot, distance about 9 km and time of 1h45.
We eventually met up with Flora as she returned from her 8 km run with the Fit First running clinic, and had coffee with her and a couple of runners in her group. It was a bit cooler out there than it has been recently but once the fog burned off it was mostly sunny.

On Wednesday evening Liane, Edie, Debbie, Kevin, Glenn and Larry walked from Cameron Centre along Beaverbrook, Eastlake, Underhil, Forest Grove down to the Gaglardi overpass, to Beaverbrook and back to the Centre in mild temperature (7 C) and no rain, one of the best nights of the year weather wise. Glenn, Lianne and Kevin took the lead and bobturned, and Debbie, Edie and Larry picked up the pace from Forest Grove onwards so the group stayed together.
Our distance was 7 km and our time was 99 minutes.

On Monday evening it was again exceptionally nice weather, 7 C and no precipitation as Liane, Larry, Glenn, Brenda and Kevin walked from Cameron Centre along Beaverbrook, going the other way this time to Gaglardi overpass, up Forest Grove hill to Underhill, down to Eastlake, Beaverbrook and back to the Centre. Larry and Liane took the lead and bobturned to keep everyone together. The group’s distance was about 7 km and time was 88 minutes.
From Alex: Alex ran on Monday during the day, going from his home to Deer Lake and back, distance 6.75 km, time 64 minutes. Way to go Alex!
From Jennel: On Monday morning Jennel and her two dogs walked down Panorama, down Salal and back to Parkway Blvd and home. Nice neighbourhood – mansion houses in the area, she felt like it was Beverly Hills Blvd! Then in the afternoon, she did another 2 km walk up Stoneridge. On Tuesday morning she and the dogs ran 5 km at a “Party Pace”! Whatever the pace, she’s out there getting it done!

A bit colder on Saturday morning (2 C) but mostly sunny as René, Liane, Kevin, Larry, Rick, Edie and Debra attended at Rocky Point and walked along the trails close to the shore, where it was high tide but not a king tide. The wooden crossing was closed due to some damage from the king tide so we had to walk out to the sidewalk alongside Murray St. and were able to get back to the trail, although still parts of the paved trail are closed off due to the sewer line replacement. Unfortunately some trees are being cut down in the process. Debra and Edie turned back partway along the trail to attend to other commitments but the remainder of the group continued on Alderside to Ioco Road then turned back.
Our distance was 10 km and our time was just under 2 hours. We finished before the rain set in and the coffee was good at the ice cream shop.
Also on Saturday morning, Flora had a good run with the Fit First half marathon training group at Christine Sinclair Centre, running along Burnaby Lake trails to the dam and back – 9 km doing 10 and 1 intervals and missed the rain entirely, then had coffee at Bastian’s. BMO coming up!
From Jennel: On Friday Jennel ran 13.3 km slow and steady pace building distance and endurance, going down Heritage Mountain and back up Noons Creek, avoiding the Coquitlam Crunch this time. Sometimes she walked up Noons Creek but kept on going and beat the rain – big dark clouds out there!

Another great evening weather wise on Wednesday night – at 8 C and no precipitation who could ask for more at this time of year – as Flora, Edie, Debra, Kevin, Liane, Larry, Glenn and Brenda walked our “new” route along Beaverbrook, Eastlake, Underhill, Forest Grove, Gaglardi overpass and back to the Centre, distance 7 km to 7.3 km depending on the number of turnarounds done by people.
Brenda and Liane took the lead on our way out, Flora and Larry jogged on the way to Underhill and then did intervals most of the rest of the way, as the group stayed together along Beaverbrook on the way back, then a final dash for the joggers up Cameron. Group time was 88 minutes.
From Jennel: Today Jennel did a 5 km hike with her two dogs, going through some bushes to Westwood Golf Course. A beautiful area but it felt a bit secluded so she turned around and returned. She has a friendly dog that would lick you to death, so not really a guard dog!

The Cruisers have sure been lucky weather-wise on walk/run nights lately (having said that I’ve probably jinxed us now!) as it was another springlike evening on Monday – after a bit of drizzle at the start there was no rain and at a balmy 10 C who could ask for more in mid-January as Liane, Larry, Kevin and Alex walked our Forest Grove route the other way around from what we’ve usually been doing this winter (we’re such rebels!), going along Beaverbrook, Eastlake, Underhill, Forest Grove, Gaglardi overpass, Beaverbrook and you know the way back to the Centre.
Our distance was 7.3 km and Liane and Larry’s time was 82 minutes, and they turned back to meet up with Kevin and Alex and all returned to the Centre in 92 minutes.
Flora trained at Burnaby Central Secondary School with the Christine Sinclair Centre running clinic, doing intervals, run jog, run jog!

On Saturday morning it was surprisingly beautiful sunny, almost springlike weather at 10 C as Len, Miriam, canine Jax, Rick, René, Edie, Liane, Kevin and Larry met at Cameron Centre and walked to Burnaby Lake using Beaverbrook, Eastlake, Production Way/Brighton, Winston, Cariboo, walked the trail alongside the lake to Piper Spit, where the ducks were out in large numbers, then went up Piper to Burnlake, Government Road, Dalebright, a cut through sidewalk to Brighton, considered stopping in at Costco but it was too early for a cheap hot dog, so we continued on to Eastlake, Beaverbrook and back to the Centre.
Our distance was 9.82 km (good enough to say 10 km!) and our time was 2h18.
Photos by Edie – “Beautiful Saturday walk – no rain. Lots of birds and bird song.”
Flora ran 8 km doing 10-and-1 intervals at the Christine Sinclair Centre running clinic, also enjoying the great weather.
From Jennel: On Friday Jennel ran 7.25 km in the rain. We hope it wasn’t raining too hard Jennel!

On Wednesday evening, it was another great mild, no precipitation night – almost springlike – as Larry, Edie, Debbie, Liane, Kevin, Alex, René, and Rick Davidson, whom we welcomed back, walked from Cameron Centre along Beaverbrook, Gaglardi overpass, Forest Grove hill, down Underhill, along Eastlake and you know the rest of the way back to the Centre. Distance was about 7.2 km and group time was 90 minutes. Liane, Larry, René and Rick picked up the pace and returned to the Centre in about 75 minutes, then circled back to rejoin the group at Beaverbrook and Centaurus Circle and walked back with them.
From Jennel: Also on Wednesday, Jennel ran 8 km going to Superstore on Barnet (in Coquitlam) and back home. She stopped running at 8 km then walked another 2 km listening to her “electronic” running guide Jeff Galloway…but he didn’t suggest buying the coffee pods ha ha! However, the coffee pods did give her a purpose, and a destination, to run!!

On Monday evening, surprisingly it did not rain, and the minor drizzle stopped about halfway through our walk as Liane, Larry, Kevin, Brenda and Glenn walked along Beaverbrook, crossed the Gaglardi overpass, went up the Forest Grove hill and continued down Underhill, Eastlake, Beaverbrook and back to Cameron Centre.
Our distance was 7.5 km and our time was 1h20. Brenda and Liane’s time was about 1h10, then they circled back from the Centre and rejoined the others at Noel and Beaverbrook and we finished up together. Nice and mild out too – the best evening of the year so far.
From Jennel: Also on Monday, Jennel ran down the Coquitlam Crunch, down Barnet/St. Johns, picked up a bottle of Kim Crawford wine (it was on sale!) and went back the same way, distance of 14 km. Then on Tuesday Jennel and Heather went for a 10 km walk and had coffee.

January 8
On Saturday morning, Larry, Edie and Flora met at Cameron Centre and were greeted by Liane who stopped by to say hello, then Larry, Edie and Flora carpooled (thanks for driving Flora!) to Jericho Park where they met Rachel and her dog, and the group walked about 5 km along the beach walkway in about 40 minutes, then went to the park to cheer on Alex, who ran the Gunner Shaw Memorial Run, a cross-country type run involving running through some mud and water.
Alex ran the 10 km run which was two laps around a 5 km route – double the water bogs! – in drizzly weather which turned into more steady rain at the end of the run. Alex’s time was 1h20. Great run Alex! A great inspiration for us.
The run was very well organized by the Lions Gate Runners.

On Wednesday evening a large turnout of Cruisers toured the new Coquitlam YMCA, located just off of Smith Ave. near Dogwood St. Debbie, Edie, Flora, Brenda, Glenn, Kevin, Liane, Larry, Len and Miriam met at Cameron Centre and walked along Cameron, Morrey, Willoughby, Lyndhurst, crossed Clarke Rd. at Smith Ave. to the new Y. The Y facility is very nice – all the fitness features, such as treadmills, muscle-workout machines, activity gym, swimming pools, weights, and an indoor walking track. The spinning bikes were too close together in our opinion and that configuration will likely change given current health concerns.
Our walking distance was 3.5 km and our walking time was 26 minutes. Thank you to Kevin for suggesting the tour!
From Jennel: Alright, I’m returning this fancy Garmin watch I was given for Christmas!?! Jeff Galloway is my personal trainer on the watch and my wrist kept buzzing until I finally chose to go for a run today (Wednesday). So, later in the afternoon I ran to Coquitlam Aquatic Centre to pick up a forgotten booklet, then ran around Town Centre….Making my run 11.29 km. Steady pace and no rain so not so mad at Jeff LOL!

On Wednesday evening, Larry, Edie, Kevin, Brenda and Glenn walked from Cameron Centre along Beaverbrook, the Gaglardi overpass, up and over the hill along Forest Grove, down Underhill, along Eastlake to Beaverbrook and back to the Centre.
Our distance was 7.5 km and our time was about 1h25. It was a bit chilly at 0 C but no rain, snow, sleet or hail so it was a good evening!
From Jennel: Today, Jennel hiked the Coquitlam Crunch with her two dogs, 5.5 km.

January 1 – Happy New Year
From Len: It was Miriam’s 26th Polar Bear Swim. Miriam and I swam to a Lifeboat and then I continued onto a kayaker. I gave him my camera to take a picture of me. I was in the water for about 9 minutes. The water temperature was 6.5 C and the air temperature was about 7 C with no wind. See the pictures here:
From Ivan: Ivan went for a New Year’s Day run, 7K in 56m following the urban trail from Burnaby Mountain High School in a there-and-back run.
Also Flora and friends participated in the Peguin Plunge
