On Friday evening Alex, Larry, Edie, her friend June (from Merritt), Flora, and Rachel participated in the Longest Day Run and Walk at UBC. We all took various skytrain and bus routes to get to and from UBC which worked out well. On the way there we were prepared for clouds and rain, but as we got closer to UBC it got sunny and warmed up, so we had great weather to do our runs and walks. The food and music after were very good too! Our walking/running times are as follows:
10 K: Flora 1h25:30, Rachel 1h23:08
5 K: Edie and June 1h00:55, Alex 0h37:13, Larry 0h36:35

Distance was about 8.75 km to 9 km, time 1h50. It was cloudy and cool but the light rain stopped as we started our walk – lucky us!

On Saturday morning René, Liane, Flora, Glenn, Brenda and Larry met at Rocky Point park and walked in the shoreline trails as far as they would take us to the junction at Alderside, then along Alderside to Ioco Road, then returned mostly the same way, extending our route to the pier, then of course to Rocky Point ice cream shop for ice cream and coffee. We all jogged at various points along our route! It was much cooler and misty, such a change from recent weather which we kind of enjoyed. Our distance was 10.2 km and our time was approximately 2h05.
On Friday afternoon, Flora, Ross, Edie, Larry, Eoin, Laura, Bob and Marie enjoyed coffee and snacks at Rod and Pat’s backyard deck, which fortunately was covered as it was raining that day! It was good to catch up with some longtime Cruisers.

On Saturday morning Edie, Flora, Liane, Alex and Larry met at the Kensington Rink parking lot and walked around the fields near Burnaby North secondary school and down Fell Ave., along the trail to Penzance Dr. and Confederation Park, then onto Hastings St. and Hats Off Day celebration by the merchants of the Burnaby Heights area. Hastings St. was closed off to motor traffic from Gamma Ave. to Boundary Rd.
There was a parade which started after 10 a.m. then kiosks set up by the merchants with displays for the public. There was lots of food, music (including a Kiss tribute band in full makeup and outfits!) and a classic car show and shine (apparently some 1990s cars are now considered classics?!) which drew the crowds. Alex joined his son and granddaughter on Hastings St. and spent most of the day there. Edie, Flora, Liane and Larry covered most of the open Hastings St. area then walked back to the rink parking lot.
Cruisers at the Hats Off Day – Photos: Flora
Distance from the rink along the trail to Hastings St. was 4.31 km and time 1h06, and distance from Hastings St. along Frances St. back to the rink was 2.74 km in approximately 27 minutes. Alex returned to the rink parking lot later in the afternoon.
Thanks to Flora and Alex for keeping track of the distances and times! Including the walk up and down Hastings St. we most likely walked more than 10 km during the day.
