May 2019
BMO by the City Hall
On Wednesday RA Edie with April, Larry, Kevin, Alex, and Bobtoc walked from the Centre once again to North Road using the Stoney Creek trail and returned to the Centre. The five enjoyed a comfortably warm evening. On the way back, Alex, who was walking with Bobtoc, spotted on the bridge joining the Stoney Creek Elementary School grounds to the trail, three plaques for want of a different name, illustrating and discussing the life of chum and sockeye salmon, species which spawn using the Stoney Creek. The artwork and description of the lives of those species were prepared by pupils of the school, and the plaques themselves seem to have been professionally made, but paid for by the City of Burnaby. The pupils involved undoubtedly learned those kinds of things from the annual Salmon Send Off which takes place at and from the school. The school, its teachers and students should be congratulated for the fine work on the plaques and the knowledge gained by all concerned. The plaques should be a must for the Cruisers on their outings along the trail. Having said all that, time for Alex and Bobtoc, one hour, less for the others, and distance, say 5 km.
From the Coquitlam Cruisers:

Monday May 6th: Alex, Susan. Rod, RA Edie with April, Eoin and Bobtoc walked south and east to the underpass leading to Government Street, where the group observed a young man struggling with an overdose. A couple who were on the scene had already phoned the BC Ambulance. Our group waited to see if anything else should be done. Eoin and Alex assisted the young man, and brought him some comfort. The ambulance did show up and took the man to the hospital. After that, our six continued their walk going west on Government Street to the traffic light at which point the group headed north back to the Centre. Distance, approx. 3.5 km, and time out,59 minutes.

Getting tired, conversation almost at a standstill! LOL (almost is the key word!!!!) ha ha!
Saturday May 11 2019:Larry, Susan, Flora, Alex, Miriam with granddog Jax, and Bobtoc met at the Centre Saturday at 8 on a warm, sunny morning. Since the day was the day of the Great Salmon Send-Off, the route chosen included the Stoney Creek trail to the bridge joining the trail to the school grounds of the Stoney Creek Elementary School. The six saw and talked to Pat Hargreaves, one of the principal volunteers of the Send Off crew. Rod had returned to their home to pick up more of the unassembled parts of the bird houses offered for sale. Pat suggested as part of our long walk for the morning a trail that leads north of the trail into the school grounds, saying that through the woods the trail leads to a (BC Hydro) installation. The six therefore took off to the said trail, and so discovered a new destination. The group eventually found the Hydro installation, circumvented it, located the way out of the area, found new areas to us, and eventually took a wide trail leading to a footbridge over Production Way. The trail led to the Forest Grove area and from there we were on familiar ground. The six continued west on Forest Grove Drive west to Underhill, south to Eastlake back to Beaverbrook to return to the school grounds to liaise with Rod who was flogging (I like that word) the bird house kits, then back to the Centre. At that time, a line of folks waiting to send off salmon was forming, although the Fisheries vehicle had not yet arrived. Time for Alex and Bobtoc, the last of the six walkers, 2:49, guestimate for distance for all six, 12 km. All in all, an interesting hike, complete with new scenery.
Coquitlam Cruisers:

Wednesday May 22 2019: On Wednesday evening, Rod, Susan, Larry and Kevin enjoyed the warm, sunny weather by walking the Stoney Creek trail and up the Burnaby Mountain trail to the start of the powerline trail area, then continued down North Road and back to Cameron the same way. Distance just over 5 km and time 1h03. Bobtoc watched the Whitecaps’ road game on TV (they tied NY Red Bulls 2-2).
Coquitlam Cruisers: Yes, they are tapering, but Monday, Heather ran 6 km and Jennel walked 6 km and swam some length of the pool. On Tuesday morning Jennel got the run done! With Nellie she ran 6 km. Ran down to Town Centre & back! Not around…just to the park. Kudos to all of you who ran the Peach City 10K!!!!!!! from Heather & Jennel “Good Job Men!!!” (and women!!!) Best of luck to Jennel and Heather at the Run for Water on Sunday!!!
Saturday May 27 2019: Kevin, Larry Len and Miriam with granddog Jax, Rene, Rod, Susan and Bobtoc met at the Centre Saturday on a damp morning. The destination for the trek chosen was Joe’s Trail. The group experienced an intensity in the falling rain yet reasonable temperature throughout. The return distance was, call it 8 km, and the time to complete ranged from 1:30 to 1:40. Alex and Flora arrived at the Centre after the main group commenced their journey. The two also chose Joe’s Trail as their destination to and return from to the Centre, however they continued east to Hume Park before turning west back to the Centre. Their time to complete was in the same vicinity as that of the main group.
Report on the Run for Water May 26th Half Marathon: Heather’s & Jennel’s times were both 2:20:18…..we ran across the finish line holding our hands up high! Tony & my girls surprised us at the finish line with signs and recorded us & took pictures of crossing over! Great run….Organized very well. Not too many people so you weren’t crowded at all. Scenery was beautiful, areas of shade from the trees to run under in the hot sun. It was a perfect day. The best run of the year in fact. Highly recommend this run.
* Unfortunately, as Heather & I turned the corner, we saw a young guy losing his balance, his eyes rolled in his head and he was waving back & forth. Heather told him to get down and helped him get to the ground…I gave him one of my water bottles as he didn’t have any water….my goodness!?! The paramedics came shortly after and we left him in the right hands. So glad we could help him out, but sure shows you “you need your water” and anything can happen on a Marathon.
Monday May 28th: RA Edie with April, Kevin, Eoin and Laura, Rod, Flora and Ross, and Bobtoc met at and walked from the Centre Monday evening to the
Stoney Creek trail to North Road, with a couple continuing to Chapman Ave before turning back. The group enjoyed a no rain evening and a comfortable temperature. Times about an hour.
Wednesday May 30 2019: On Wednesday evening Alex, RA Edie with April, Kevin, Eoin and Laura, Larry, Rod, Susan and Bobtoc left the Centre to walk the Forest Grove Drive route using Eastlake, north to Underhill, east onto Forest Grove Drive to the pedestrian overpass to the Stoney Creek Elementary School, south back to Noel, Cameron Street to the Centre. Our shirts were rainbow by the end! Super fun!!! Perfect day weather wise too!!!
