February 2019
First outing of the month!  Walked from Cameron to pier – lots of wildlife (not pictured)

Saturday February 2nd:  RA Edie with canine April,  Larry back from Maui with his suntan and medal, Len and Miriam, Flora, Rachel, Laura and Eoin, Rick, Rod, and Bobtoc met at the Centre on a  + 5 C, no rain morning.  The route chosen for the walk/run was to the north trail leading to Burnaby Lake via Cameron St, west  then south to Government St, south to the Cariboo crossing, then west on the trail to the Spit to inspect the wonderful assortment of ducks, geese and other varieties, then back to the Centre.  Distance for all, 7.5 km, times ranging from 1:32 to 1.46.. Eoin did well considering the short time since he was operated on to repair his knee.  Everyone enjoyed the outing; none missed rain.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Well, Heather & Jennel signed up for a FREE Clinic at the Running Room for Sat. mornings.  We were the only 2 that showed up.  So they offered us a chance to join another group that leaves earlier on Sat.  to be with more people….that works..  However, we still got our run in today.  Jennel parked at Heather’s, the two ran to Running Room, from there they ran on the Canada Trail around and about (Running Room often runs this route) and back to Heather’s we went….10.24 km.

Monday February 4th: As you know, an outing for a run/walk Monday was called off due to weather conditions.  Let us try tomorrow evening; same time, same place. Dress warmly! But, Len went skiing.

Coquitlam Cruisers:

Jennel & Nellie went snow-crunching!  On Monday morning we woke up to quite a bit of snow up here in Westwood Plateau!  So put on Nellie’s winter jacket, dropped off the kids at school, walked a couple laps of the school track, then proceeded up the Coquitlam Crunch (in snow boots of course, and there are NO stairs on the part we hike on!   It was beautiful, COLD yes…but we got in a nice hike(approx..5 km).  Then Tuesday morning, we walked down Parkway Blvd and up again…(3.5 km)

Wednesday February 6th: Edie with canine April, Larry, Rene’, Rod and Bobtoc met at the Centre Wednesday on a cold  -2C  evening for a walk using the familiar Eastlake route to Underhill  from the Centre.  Rene’, Larry and Rod achieved their walk to Underhill.  Edie and Bobtoc did not quite get to Underhill, but returned with the other three, although their time was a bit higher than them.  Distance, 4.7 or so, time about 55 minutes for the three, and about an hour for the two plus April.  As said above, the temperature was COLD; however there was neither snow nor wind.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Wednesday morning, Jennel & Heather ran from Heather’s home around Town Centre Park twice, then back to Heather’s….8.3 km (Tony drove Jennel to Heather’s as roads around Jennel;s house still  not good for running yet due to snow/ice)

Saturday February 9th: Larry, Rod, Ivan and Bobtoc met at the Centre Saturday on a frigid morning, temperature somewhere between 0C and -1C, with a wind from the east.  The four quickly resolved to walk to Timmie’s for coffee and sustenance for a debriefing.  Topics; numerous, then the foursome returned to the Centre.  The four noted Alex’s van there; he obviously turned up after the foursome left. We were sorry to have missed him.
Distance and time for the four:  1 km, time 1:13.
To Ivan:  Good luck on your First Half Marathon tomorrow !
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Jennel, Nellie and friend T. hiked the Coquitlam Crunch Friday morning.  13,012 steps!  Approx 7.5  to 8 km if I remember correctly!  Snowed a bit on the walk, but cleared up and was a beautiful day !
Here is the news from Ivan’s half marathon yesterday:

I ran with everything in my running wardrobe on and did not get too cold.  Official Finishing Time: 2h 13m.
Way to go, Ivan!  NO minus degree temperatures are going to hold you back!

Coquitlam Cruisers:
On Saturday Heather and Jennel ran from Heather’s home to the Running Room and joined in with a run group.  15 of us ran down the POCO trail route to avoid the extreme wind and cold.  Heather and Jennel ran a distance of 15 km.
Saturday February 16th:  On Saturday morning, Edie, Larry, Susan, Rod, Eoin and Laura, Alex, Ivan and Bobtoc gathered at Tim Horton’s at North Road for a debriefing and to keep warm, to seek a prize of a new Jeep (no winners; not even a free coffee).  Eoin and Bobtoc resolved to walk the Sun Run.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Heather & Jennel have been getting in lots of SNOW hiking this week!  Saturday morning, we skipped the Running Room (too much slush)…and we brought both our dogs, Burrows & Nellie on a snow hike up to Crystals Falls.  1.5 hour hike in the snow….good catch up and dogs had a great time!!!=

Sunday February 17th:
Burnaby Lake – FitFirst Training Session – the perks of running.
Monday February 18th:
Alex ,Larry, Rod, Edie with April, Susan and Bobtoc overcame my goof in displaying time to be at the Burnaby Lake parking lot Monday morning as 6.30 pm , and in fact met at 8:00 am there, although Susan needed a drive provided by Edie fo the Burnaby Lake parking lot from Cameron Centre.  The five walked south from the parking lot on Sperling Avenue, then followed the road east past the refuge there for wild animals, before returning to the parking lot.  The weather conditions were:  temperature just above zero, cloud cover, no melting going on.  Distance 3.9 km, time, 53 minutes, plus time to walk to Fortius building for coffee and debriefing.
Wednesday February 20th:
Wednesday on a frigid but clear evening, R A Edie with canine April, Eoin and Laura, Rod, Larry, Mary, Alex, and Bobtoc met at the Centre, and despite some slippery spots, walked the Eastlake route to Underhill and return to the Centre.  Alex took the opportunity of getting in some extra distance and running.  A substantial distribution of chemicals was made on the sidewalk surface, but the thawing and re-freezing to snow  caused some slippery spots. Distance for most, 4 km; time 1:19; distance for Alex, 4.7 km.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
On Monday morning Jennel & Nellie hiked the Coquitlam Crunch in the drift of fresh snow!!!  5km…..
Wednesday morning was quite snowy here in Coquitlam, so Heather & Jennel walked and met up at Starbuck… after a nice cup of coffee, the two then walked over to Jaks wine store across the way to enquire about something…there was a wine tasting!  Yahoo!  So, they both got to test a couple of the Nighthawks Vineyards, Okanagan Falls wines!  Lovely!   Now this was the “Best Run of the Year!!!”  LOL – total run/walk:  10.68km
Saturday February 23rd:
On Saturday am Flora, Larry, Rod and Bobtoc met at the Centre.  Taking into account some rain falling, the foursome
wasted no time resolving to walk to Timmie’s for a debriefing.  The distance to and from Timmie’s totalled less than 2 km;
time to and from totalled 22.31,  the time back a bit less than the time to Timmie;s.  Bobtoc won a free donut; he took it home
for his bride.
In the late afternoon, Alex and Angela, Bob, Edie, Flora, Len and Miriam,  Leslie Zenger, Karen O’Shannacery who captained
the team,  participated in the Coldest of the Year walk, commencing from Burnaby’s Marlborough School near Royal Oak area
in the 5 k walk, one of a choice of 2k, 5k, or 10k walk.  There were 275+ participants in the runs, all in support of the End
Homelessness in Burnaby campaign.   The teams enjoyed a no rain or snow, mild temperature afternoon and evening outside
in an effort supported by a goodly number of monitors ensuring the many teams did not get lost.  The efforts of all the participants
in the effort raised some $63,000 in support of the effort to
end homeliness in the City.  Half  a dozen of our team then enjoyed
fellowship and a bite to eat at the Firefighters pub which was in easy walking distance to the school.  Bobtoc met a number of folks
he had worked with over the years in, e.g., the Vancouver Sun Run training sessions.  All in all the afternoon and evening was a
success in terms of benefitting Burnaby citizens.  Mayor Len Murley also participated in the Walk, as did the NDP candidate in the
by-election forthcoming in  the Burnaby South riding.

Monday February 25th:  On Monday night, four Cruisers out. Donna, Laura, Eoin and Rod;  Donna doing Sun Run training so not sure of her distance and time. The other three did 5km in 1h11. ( the usual route up to Underhill and back)
Coquitlam Cruisers:
On Tuesday,Jennel & Nellie went for a slow jog up to Westwood Golf course, then dropped dog off and ran down to Town Centre Park to meet Heather,  The two ladies ran once together around Town Centre Park, then Jennel headed home and Heather ran another lap of Town Centre.
Total Km:  Heather – 10km,  Jennel 14km.=
Wednesday February 27th:On Wednesday evening, Alex, Larry, Rod, Laura, Eoin and Bobtoc  showed up at the Centre under improved conditions as far as temperature, being above zero, and traction were concerned.  The group again used the Eastlake to Underhill  route and return for their walk/run.  Distance and time, call it 5 k and 69 minutes.
Coquitlam Cruisers:
Not going to say that “4 letter word”, but it’s falling and our driveway is covered!  Good Grief!  This is making Heather’s & my runs a little difficult!?!  Plan was to meet up tomorrow again, but the SNOW may prevent us from this AGAIN!!!
Tony & I got a nice hike up the Coquitlam Crunch Wednesday morning.  I may just take up snowshoeing instead these days!?!=
The snow melted a bit…Heather and Jennel met Thursday morning at Town Centre and ran 2 laps, then back to their homes;  10 km for Heather, 12 km for Jennel
Anamaria is on BC News shown sliding down the hill and into the reporter.  Close encounters.
