Happy New Year!
Not all the Cruisers were as brave as Miriam and Len who did the Annual Polar Bear Swim at English Bay as part of their long standing New Years Day tradition and Flora and Rachel who did the Penguin Plunge again at Rocky Point. Flora and Rachel went to the hot tub at Poirier and then on to lunch at Cafe Divano in Klahani.
We are very proud of our brave plungers!
Edie, Susan and Larry with April also ventured out on New Year’s Day. They parked around 6th and Cambie and walked the seawall to Kitsilano, got a hot drink at Starbucks and sat on a bench at the beach to take in the ocean view and people watch before retracing their steps back to the car. for about a 9k walk.
A lovely way to start the New Year.
Wednesday January 2nd: On Wednesday evening Rod, Larry and Bobtoc met at and walked from Cameron Centre on a dark, but mild evening with rain p%%%ing down heavily. The trio, complete with three black umbrellas and minimum lights, chose the Forest Grove Drive route starting at the Gaglardi pedestrian overpass to Forest Grove Drive and continued until well past the crest of the hill on Forest Grove Drivel, then opted to reverse their walk to return back over the overpass back to the Centre; time 1.08 and distance the same 7 km as would have been if the walk/run continued to Underhill, Eastlake back to the Centre.
Saturday January 5th: Len and Miriam with granddog Jax, Larry, Rod, Rick, Susan, Ivan, Flora and Bobtoc met Saturday on a no rain, relatively mild morning at Cameron Centre. The route chosen was Joe’s Trail and return. Ivan ran, joined by Rick and Len (see his report)Larry ran some of the distance while the others walked. Flora and Bobtoc were the last out and almost last in, not having walked quite to North Road before turning back. The distance was approx. 7 km, and times varied between, say 1:28 and 1:36. As said above, there was no rain, some sunshine, all a pleasant change from other times out recently.

(Not to be outdone, Rod went out with Pat in the afternoon to Burnaby Lake and did 7 km walk in 1h 02, followed by coffee at Starbucks at Fortius.

The destination for the morning walk was to Como Lake park, using the route of Willoughby Ave. to Smith St. east to the Como Lake park, do a circuit round the lake back to Smith St. to return to the Centre, for a distance of 10k. Len and Alex teamed up to do some running on their return; their time was 1:54 for the 10k full distance. Miriam, Rachel and Bobtoc teamed up for their walking return; their time was 2.11.

Donna, a member of a SunRun clinic opted to do some running; and so did she, by breaking from the walkers a few times, running ahead, then returning to the group. Distance for the four, 4.8 km but call it 5km, and for Donna, likely 5:5 km. Time out and back for the five, 1:07.

The four walked the familiar Eastlake to Underhill and return route. On their way back they encountered a large number of runners on Eastlake; their name seems to be North Burnaby runners. Our four engaged in conversation with them and were told they run out of a brewery south of Eastlake; not sure if it is on Production Way. We no doubt shall see them again, and will obtain more information. Time and distance respectively for the four Cruisers, 1.14 and call it 5 km.
