July 2018
Confederation Centre to New Brighton Park

On Canada Day, Larry, Susan, Edie and Edie’s friends from her walking group, Marguerite, June,
Maureen, Greg and others, along with three dogs, walked the Trans Canada trail from Eton just west of Willingdon, under the Second Narrows bridge and onwards to New Brighton Park, distance about 10 km, time about 2 hours.  Most of the group then went to Café Artigiano’s on Hastings St. for some refreshments.  It was cloudy and about 18 C, pleasant, and the sun was peeking out as we were sitting outside the coffee shop on Hastings St.

On Saturday, between World Cup games (of course!) Rod ran/walked from home, doing the Forest Grove loop, 7.5 km in 1h03.

July 4 2018: Rod reports that on Wednesday, three Cruisers, Laura, Eoin and Rod went out from Cameron on a warm and humid night with showers in the air.

Time out 47 min. Distance 3.2 km.
On Wednesday  Cruisers RA Edie, Alex, Angela, Larry and Bobtoc attended the Giro di Burnaby volunteers dinner meeting at the Confederation Seniors Centre at Confederation Park , and in doing so renewed contact with runners and other volunteers known in the past 10 years of the Giro’s operation.  Looking forward to the big day.

Saturday July 7 2018: “Senators” Alex, Rod and Bobtoc met at the Centre on a wet, wet morning Saturday.  Because of the rain the trio walked using only the Stoney Creek trail to North Road and back;  time 1:02, distance  3 km or so.
Monday July 10 2018:  On Monday evening  Alex, Rod, Edie with April, and Bobtoc met at the Centre Monday evening under threatening skies, which produced little or no precip for their walk/run.  The route chosen was the Forest Grove Drive, from the Centre,  west to Underhill, north to the Drive, east to the Gaglardi pedestrian overpass to the Forest Grove Community School then back to the Centre.  Time and distance, 1:41 and 8 km respectively.

Wednesday July 12 2018:  Cruisers, Alex, Angela, Edie, April, Bob, Jennel and family, Heather and hubby, and friends June and Lisette participated in the 20 minute challenge.

Rod and Larry did the Forest Grove Loop 7.8k in 1:14 from Cameron Centre.

On Thursday  evening  Angela, Alex, Edie and Bobtoc were again  volunteers at the Giro di Burnaby cycle races on the Heights. A warm day-evening.  The event was yet  again well organized by Rainy and a number of veteran volunteers for the event which has become an institution 0f the City of Burnaby.

Saturday July 14th:  Len and Miriam, Laura and Eoin, Larry, Susan,  Flora,  and Bobtoc walked from Cameron Centre on a warm morning Saturday to Como Lake, did a lap round the lake, enjoyed the geese and ducks and a few fishermen there, plus the serene water of the lake and the surrounding trees and flowers.  A few of the women spotted a couple of homes along the way where goods of all description were being flogged, and took on some stuff to bring back, leaving a few $$$$ behind.  All in all, a pleasant morning.  Time out, 2:10 and distance, 8.75 km, less time for Len who ran part of the distance back.  Granddog Jax of Len and Miriam was not present; I did not find out why he was not with them.  In the meantime, back in Russia,  Belgium defeated England 2 to-0.  Can’t wait for tomorrow.
Monday July 16th:  Alex, Edie with April, Laura and Bobtoc, due to the hot temperature, limited our movement to walking the Stoney Creek trail from the Centre to North Road and return to the Centre, which route provided shade from the sun and cooler temperature than being out in the sun.  The foursome walked a distance of 3.9 km in 1 hour and 2 minutes.

Wednesday July 18th:  On Wednesday evening,  Alex, Edie with April, Larry, Susan and Bobtoc met at the Centre for a walk using the Forest Grove Drive route.  Edie and Susan walked only to Underhill Avenue before returning to the Centre, Edie wishing to put new photographs on our bulletin board at the Centre.  Alex, Larry and Bobto continued the full route using the Gaglardi pedestrian overpass and the Beaverbrooks past the Forest Grove Community Centre.  Larry completed the route a few minutes before Alex and Bobtoc, who did the 7.9 km in 1.41, Larry being a few minutes earlier. The five enjoyed good weather; not too hot.

Saturday July 21st:  On Saturday morning, Laura, Eoin, Larry, Susan, Alex, Len and Miriam with Jax, met at Confederation Park and walked down the Willingdon linear park sidewalk which was having its official opening celebration.  We walked from the park to Hastings St. and started our walk southward down the sidewalk on Willingdon as the booths were being set up for the 8:30 a.m. opening.  Highlights included the sculptures along the way and a huge aerial map of Burnaby that was spread out on the street. Several blocks of Willingdon were blocked off to traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. so booths could be set up on the street.  Just like the Giro di Burnaby except without the fencing!  We then walked through the Brentwood mall area, taking a close up look at the new towers and adjoining buildings that will completely transform the mall.  We continued along Lougheed Hwy to Douglas Road, turned onto Still Creek Ave., passed

by Jack’s building materials store and Costco, up some stairs to the Willingdon overpass, and headed over to Solo Square (at the corner of Willingdon and Lougheed) where we stopped for refreshments at Starbuck’s and Whole Foods.  Then we walked along the linear park sidewalk back to Confed Park, with Laura already walking back to Confed and returning to Solo Square by car to pick up Eoin.  The morning weather was spectacular, sunny and about 20 C, distance about 8.2 km and time 2h48 or so.

From Jennel:  Sorry, I’ve been out of the loop for a while…so hot, vacationing having fun in the sun!  However, have been doing daily walks a day with dog Nellie & kids.  On Saturday, Nellie & Jennel walked all the way up Stoneridge Blvd.  “Resembles Underhill!!!”  Only 2km, but it’s a HILL!!!!       Hope you continue conquering those hills Jennel!!

Wednesday July 25th:  On Wednesday evening, Laura, Larry, Alex and his friend Andrew walked the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, where the group turned into the trail leading up to Burnaby Mountain, then returned down North Road to the trail back to Cam Centre.  It was warm (30 C) but the route was in almost complete shade the entire way and unexpectedly, a cool light breeze blew most of the way, which made for a pleasant walk for us.  Distance 5.5 km, time 1h10.

From Jennel: I walked again Monday after the sun went down…however, it was still warm.  3.5km up & down Parkway Blvd.  Perhaps doing it again tonight, but that’s not a promise 🙂  Seemed like a good idea this morning but it is still hot and I’m tired!  So, I may just stay in my air-conditioned home!!!   I walked Parkway Blvd!!!!  Yahoo!!!

Saturday July 28th: On Saturday morning Eoin and Laura, Edie with April, Larry and Bobtoc met at the Centre and chose to walk west and south to the Nature House enroute to Burnaby Lake.  The temperature was in the 20’s which made the conditions for the walk as well as could be expected.  Edie, Larry and Laura arrived back at the Centre in time of approx.. 1:58;  Eoin and Bobtoc checked in at 2:04, Bob getting genned up from Eoin re: football in Europe;including discussion regarding the placement upcoming for Alphonso Davies,  for which Bobtoc thanks Eoin heartily.  Distance for the five,   6+ km.

Monday July 30th:  Laura and Eoin, Laura, Larry, Rod and Bobtoc met at the Centre on a very very hot day 6:30 Monday.  Due to the heat, the sextet walked,  using the Stoney Creek trail due to the shade available on that route.  The six walked to North Road and returned to the Centre; time and distance one hour and 3.7 km respectively. Blackberries on vines along the route were tested by a few of us; the berries need a few more days to ripen; however the ones tested were promising.  Upon our return to the Centre, we met Jennel and Tony Fatiguso together with their two daughters Anamaria and Sofia, as well as Tony’s sister,  near the parking lot, and enjoyed a visit with them.  The day was  Anamaria’s 10thbirthday.  We had a great visit with them; a fine family to be sure.
