June 2nd: On Monday, a beautiful early summer night if there ever was one, Bobtoc, Rod and Edie walked the trail behind Stoney Creek School to North Road, up the newly paved walkway to Chapman, and return, time something close to 1h 11m, distance specifics not known at press time.
Jennel reports: Heather & Jennel both did a 5km run tonight on their own. Tomorrow (Tuesday) they will meet and run a 19km run together; the longest run of their training for the Scotia Half Marathon! Hey, isn’t that almost a 1/2 right there!?! CRAZY GALS!?!
June 4th: On Wednesday evening, with more awesome early summer weather, Rod, Bobtoc, Larry, Libby and Laura ran down Cameron along the trail to Winston, and on to the Burnaby Lake trail to the Nature House and returned. With the good weather, many geese and ducks with their young were out and about, as well as some of the turtles that were heard by some of our runners. Distance 7 km, time 1h 02m. Looks like the Faller’s Trophy will change hands soon, but this mystery will unveil itself soon – stay tuned!
Jennel reports that she’s signed up for the Rock and Roll Half Marathon and there has been some interest expressed in this run by others.
NEW FROM ANAMARIA!!! She just completed her 100th km of running!!!! YAHOO!!! Good for her!!!
Proud Mama,
Jennel:)
June 7th:Rod, Larry, Alex, Edie with canine April, and Bobtoc met on Saturday at Rocky Point on a serene, pristine and pristine morning; sun, ideal temperature, for a run/walk as it turned out to Orchard Park, April Road for Edie, and the Ioco gates for the four guys, their distance 12 km, and 10 for Edie. The day was the very best of the year. The five managed to squeeze a one hour run into two hours and enjoyed the scenery, flora and fauna. Even the many dogs on leashes smiled. The five as per usual ended their run/walk at the pier, and celebrated their day with ice cream from the Rocky Point purveyor.
June 9th: Rod, RA Edie and Bobtoc walked from the Centre Monday on a perfect evening using the Stoney Creek trail to North Road, south on North to the avenue immediately east, then south past the park to Como Lake Road, continued south to Noel Drive, west to a path which went south leading to the rear side of the Cameron Centre library and rec centre. Time 48.21, no estimate of the distance. A sublime time, plus the time to stretch leg and mouth muscles.
We had a wonderful cruise up to Alaska. It was my first cruise but it exceeded my expectations. The food was great, the scenery superb and the entertainment was surprisingly good. We also did some hiking in Juneau and Ketchikan. It was a cold, wet rainy day in Skagway but God blessed us with perfect weather the next day so that his incredible creation could be on full display for us to see.
June 11th:
Alex, RA Edie with canine April, Larry, Rachel, Rod and Bobtoc ran and walked from the Centre to Joe’s Trail Wednesday on the best night of the year. Run/walkers Alex, Larry, Rod and Bobtoc made the distance to the North Road gate and returned, distance and time 7.5 km and 1:09; for walkers Edie and Rachel, 5 km, 1:13. Before the six left the Centre, Edie’s husband drove his newly-acquired 2004 Mustang Shalleen convertible; fire engine red in colour, 4.8 litre V8 powered, better than new. No kidding on that score. The car is both beautiful and a keeper! Happy miles to Tim and Edie.
News from Coquitlam:
Tony & Jennel walked around Lafarge Lake two times & a bit….last Saturday morning, making it a 5km walk
Jennel’s Tuesday run:
Jennel did a 8km run this morning from Panorama, down to David….running at tempo speed searching for her Running Partner….(but Heather was unable to meet up with her as she had last min. family plans with relatives). So Jennel just ran down David like she was meeting up with Heather: .5km past Shaughnessey; turned around and ran back.
Heather planned on getting in an 8km run too today at some point.
Congratulatons to Jennel and Tony who celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary today. Two daughters, madly in love! Blessings to the Fatiguso family!
The Longest Day June 13th:
We all had long drives to UBC to attend the Longest Day Run, lots of traffic on the way and scarce parking when we arrived. Flora, Ross and I barely made the start time and Ross and I walked quite a ways before we even got there – we were tired before we started. Rachel and Louise and arrived before us.
10k – Louise 1:01:24
5k – Rachel 40:18, Edie 40:19, Ross 42:53 and Flora 44:06
The weather was perfect for running but cooled down considerably after the sun went down so we were appreciative of extra clothes. The food was great as usual and White Spot had strawberry tarts and Tim Horton’s had coffee. Rachel put her nursing skills to work on a runner who choked on a strawberry by doing the Heimlich Maneuver. Good thing she was there!
The event today at Rocky Point was a triathalon: Kayak from the pier to Old Orchard Beach. then bike to ? and back (short and long course but doesn’t say where to or how faron the website), then run back to the finish line near the pier.
Saturday June 14th: Rocky Point in the Rain
The Grouse Grind Group – report from Len
We did it too! I thought that I would get slower as the week went on as I would get progressively more tired and slower but the opposite happened. Here are my week times, 1:23, 1:21, 1:16, 1:15, 1:10, 1:10 and 1:07 this morning. Miriam’s times were 1:25, 1:32, 1:20, 1:10, 1:09, 1:12 and 1:09. Note she was faster than me on days 4 and 5. She had a secret weapon, her IPOD, that cause her to go running up the trail. The last day it back fired as she had trouble getting it going.
Here are a few pictures.
Hard work has its rewards!
and my Grouse Grind Times & Distance Log.
June 16th:
Only Rod and Bobtoc ran from the Centre Monday evening. The duo ran the familiar Forest Grove route, from the Centre west on Eastlake, Underhill, east on Forest Grove Drive, the pedestrian overpass, the Beaverbrooks, returning to the Centre. Time and distance, 1:05, 7.5 km.
From Coquitlam:
Heather & Jennel met and ran around Town Centre Park two times, then headed back to each of our homes.
Jennel’s total run….11.79km
Heather total run….10km.
June 18th: HIGH DRAMA IN BURNABY WEDNESDAY EVENING!
On Wednesday Alex, Larry, Laura, Rod and Tracy and Bobtoc set out to run into the SFU trails via Stoney Creek trail, North Road, north on North and then into the right of way trail leading north and west, but that plan was delayed and aborted when runners spotted a man carrying a rifle into the trails. 911 was called, resulting in three cars from Port Moody police and three from the RCMP rendezvoued with said runners to obtain descriptions and observations from said runners. A helicopter later emerged and circled the area for some time. Drama big time! Nothing further developed, therefore the group continued east on Chapman to North Road and returned to the Centre via Cameron Street. Total time out, 1:32, distance unknown, but not a lengthy one.
Five Cruisers showed up Saturday at 8:00 am for a run west on the first day of summer and the best day of the year weather-wise. The temperature, shade enroute were perfect. Rod ran to Underhill and Eastlake only since he had a family commitment on the North Shore in the morning. Alex, Laura, Larry and Bobtoc ran to the Kensington Arena and returned to the Centre; time for Larry, about 2:35, distance 17 km due to bobturns, and for the the trio, 16 km, time, 2:41.
To Jennel, Heather and Joe Turtle, good luck and good running in the Scotia Half.
Scotia Half: First things first:
Hi Edie, here are some photo’s of the Scotia. The guy in Red & woman in Purple are my friends Jin & Reginia. That’s the guy who depended on ME to bring him in at Sub 2. Ya, no pressure there!?! ha! ha! Well, I accomplished that! He came in at 1:58, so it worked! Let me know if you need the link or if this is ok. for copying the pictures. Jennel:)
Joe Turtle celebrated his 75th birthday by running the Scotiabank Half Marathon Sunday June 22nd. Little did he know then that he would return home to a surprise party gathering of runners and “athletic supporters”. Congrats to Joe!
Results: Gun Chip
Jennel Fatiguso 1:59:02 1:55:50
Heather Tecson 2:12:59 2:11:46
Joe Turtle 2:19:18 2:18:28 Third in his brand new age group
Rachel Lindquist 35 minutes 5k
June 23rd: Alex, Laura, Rod and Bobtoc ran and walked east Monday from the Centre on a warm, overcast evening to Cochrane Ave via North Road, then to Appian Way to Robinson St, north to Chapman Ave, then west to North Road, to the Stoney Creek trail, where Alex and Bobtoc checked out a few salmonberries (thinking of you, Nancy) after having checked out a home on Rathburn to view the rebuilt front lawn and landscaping, then returned to the Centre using Beaverbrook. Distance, 6.8 km, time 1:14.
June 25th: On Wednesday, Rod, Larry, Laura, Alex and Rachel ran Joe’s Trail, taking advantage of the largely shaded pathway in what was a truly glorious summer evening, and actually running at a goodly pace, all of us working up a sweat. There was discussion of Edie’s great result at the Scotiabank 5 km run on the previous weekend, another one of those “mysteries” that occured while she recovers from her surgery. Time of our evening run 1h 10m, distance 7.8 km. Bobtoc sweated it out in a different way, watching the Whitecaps play to a 0-0 draw against Montreal at BC Place, in contrast to the high-scoring World Cup games.
June 28th: Alex, Larry, Laura, Len, Rod and Bobtoc met at the Centre Saturday morning under cloudy with sunny breaks, affording a most comfortable temperature in which to run. The six opted to run to Kensington Arena and return, although Len cut his run short due to home commitments. He ran with the grooup to the IGA corner at Greystone and Burnwood before returning to the Centre. During his run, he doffed runners and socks to bare his soles on the pavement. His time and distance, 1:26, 9.66 km. The others continued on to the Arena, took pitstops before returning to the Centre. On the return they used Beaverbrook to Cameron Street, traversed the hill at Bell, and finished their run at the Centre; time and distance, about 2:35, 16.5 km.
June 30th: On Monday night, three Cruisers showed up, while others took a long weekend (where did they go….). Larry and Alex had the pleasure of talking with Adele, who attended to say hello to everyone, and she says hi to all those who were not there. Larry and Alex took advantage of the gorgeous evening weather and stayed cool at the same time by running a route that was in the shade the whole way, and being smart guys, took to the trailways for the entire run. They ran along the trail behind the Cameron Centre to North Road, then went into the trails up to Burnaby Mountain, doing the powerline trail and continued up the mountain to the base of the SFU trails, then ran back along the powerline trail, taking a different “inside” trail down through the wooded area again to the intersection of North Road and the trail back to Cameron Centre. Did I mention we used the trails? We were also in the Canada Day spirit, both of us in red T-shirts. Time of run 1h 08m, distance 7.5 km.
Have a happy Canada Day everyone!
